Namibia Shopping

  • Anderson Gate, Etosha - carvings

I thought they would be tourist rip off prices and, ok, thy are nowhere near as cheap as some of the items I bought in remote areas... but you certainly wont grumble at the price tags! The carvers are friendly and there is no hastle to buy (which I thought there might be once I swung the car over and got out, with children, to closer inspect). I...

  • Supermarket

In case you plan a self drive safari trip to Namibia, just be aware that most if not all food, drinks and such stuff you can buy in Namibia and surely in Windhoek when arrive here and no need to carry it all the way from where ever you come from. The supermarket in Windhoek had everything we just needed.

These are the 2 best flavoured waters in the world. Really. I found them at the BP fuel station in Windhoek. The pictured flavours, MARULA and NAARTJIE are amazing and beyond compare. Combined with that, they were ice cold! It gets hot in Namibia so why have just any cold water when you can have heaven in a plastic bottle. Makers NESTLÉ has a...

To have a real authentic African Braai you need a few things: Wood! Yes wood. You also need meat; preferably Texas steak which is a huge steak already marinated in tasty spices and feeds about 4 people. Also you will want some Boerwoers. This is a thick tasty sausage that has no comparison anywhere in the world. Preferably from the butchers...

  • Wooden masks

There are plenty of shops in Swakopmund selling art and craft objects, both Namibian and from other parts of Africa. The price usually reflects the quality and if you want a special souvenir you’ll find something I’m sure in one of these shops. However we found that there were plenty of reasonably priced items available at the craft market too,...

  • Malakani nuts

Everywhere you go in Namibia you’ll see carved Malakani nuts for sale. The carvings are usually of local wildlife and in the craft shops they’re often made into key rings, light pulls etc. Whenever we parked in a town and got out of the car, several men would approach and ask our names, or maybe our mothers’ names, and after a while we realised...

  • Even in the middle of nowhere there's a...

Ah Namibia, the wide open spaces, the lack of people....But of course, there is always 1 entrepreneur and here he is. This was in the middle of nowhere driving from Etosha to the Waterberg plateau. Not exactly Tesco or Walmart but amazing to see nevertheless!

  • African Style

Do visit the likes of curio shops, souvenier shops etc while in Africa and take home some local craft. In Namibia one can find wooden masks and other carvings, as well as some nice jewelry, especially where gems, crystal and precious stones are concerned.

  • Bargain Clothes

This is a popular clothes shop, with good quality clothes at bargain prices compared to what we pay in England. Always a stop off to top up the wardrobe or buy gear for any male in your life. Shirts, t-shirts, trousers, kids clothes as well as ladies too. £3 for a round neck t-shirt, £6 for a short sleeved shirt and maybe £13 for chino style...

  • Typical souvenir

A very typical souvenir is a Malakani Nut as a key ring. On the nuts are African animals engraved. You can get it also with your name engraved. If you enlarge the picture you can see the makalani nuts hanging down the roof ...You can buy them also in souvenir shops in town which are somewhat stylish and snobby but I recommend to buy them from the...

  • New entry on my list of favourite songs

The song Vul'Indlela is playing almost without interruption since I'm back home! The first time I heard it at the pool party of Silke's friend and I liked the song from the beginning! I've bought the CD Greatest Hits of Brenda Fassie. And Brenda has much more great songs! I got it in Musica. The shop is located on the main shopping street downtown...

  • Buy Sprinkle Spice

Buy the Colman's Worcestershire Spinkle Spice from Holbrooks. Since I tasted it, it is one of my favourite spices. Make a salad of tomatoes and avocados and just put on this spice. It is EXCELLENT!!! Try it on a boiled egg or use into your salad dressing ...Unfortunately I have no idea if it is available in Germany or somewhere else in Europe....

  • Supermarkets and more

There is little people at Namibia but the have great supermarkets with all kind of things, belive me you will not miss nearly anything.Spar is a chain of supermarkets I saw in every city I went, they are really big supermarkets where you can pay with credit card without problem.Great varity of fruit, vegetables and meat, all kind of biscuits ......

  • bargin......

Just outside in the street. You can bargin with the sellers on the street.Enjoy!! African crafts are the best choices. Hereo dolls are among the most speical ones. Both SA Rand and Namibian dollars are lagal tender. The rate is 1:1 but for international visitors, I think it's better to pay and get refund by Rand.

  • Wood Carvings

This "shop" was a roadside shop and I could have bought tons of these wonderful wood carvings!!! There are shops in the bigger cities, but I preferred to buy these souvenirs right from the artist himself!

  • Pick up a copy of "When Hippo was Hairy"

I'm actually describing a book, not a shop. If you're traveling to southern Africa with younger family members, I'd suggest that you pick up a copy of "When Hippo was Hairy" by Nick GreavesISBN# 1-86872-456-5(Check with the publisher book has approximately 30 tales and legends concerning the animals and lands of southern...

  • Native crafts....carvings, polished...

This is really more of a local craft co-op shop. Numerous artisans and shop owners are located under one basic roof, offering all sorts of native carvings, weaved goods and polished stones.Negotiations are the name of the game at this location. Sellers are active, but not threatening. As was the case in most Namibian local shops, service and...

  • Nice bedline

I think here you can get lots of things to give your place an exotic and african touch. bedline and home textiles It is not really cheap but as everything is handmade I guess it is a fair price.

  • Lovely Fabric

In Windhoek we bought some wonderful fabric - it is a great souvenir! It was a small shop owned by Namibians of German descent, who gave us a lot of additional information, too! It was a fabulous shopping experience!

  • Quality Arts and Crafts

The centre is a gallery and selling point for many local artists and crafts people selling original works of all description. Here you will find work that is not available from the curio sellers churning out stuff enmasse. There is a lot of linen work such as quilt covers, table cloths, cushion covers etc which have all been decorated with freehand...

  • More Namibian crafts

On the streets in the city center you have plenty of chances to buy souvenirs. For example you find crafts made of wood or metal and baskets .... Have fun by haggling over the price

  • Interesting selection of Namibian arts...

On the 824 269 square kilometers on two floors you find a great variety of crafts. There is also a coffee bar and a museum.
