Walvis Bay bound

Taxi service in Swakop is not necessary but you will need to get to Walvis Bay if you plan to leave the city by plane; Cape Town connections are from there. How to get there from Swakop is rather intriguing. There is no public transportation (it is Africa after all) and your landlords or any travel related service will tell you that there is "white" taxi that they deal with. An attempt to engage with a "regular" read black chaffered taxi with the hope that it might be cheaper ended nowhere; the guy did not want my business or simply was on another planet as most Africans seem to be. Who knows, maybe there is a left-over segregation system - whites do the airport at Walvis and the blacks buzz in town!?!

Intercape saga

Intercape bus has a service from Windhoek to Swakopmund early in the morning at 6:30h. The problem is that this particular bus waits for its counterpart to come from Cape Town which includes border crossing and hence difficult to predict arrival times. In this particular case the Intercape bus to Swakopmund pulled off the “bus station” one hour later. Otherwise the trip is comfortable and the five hours or so pass effortlessly watching the endless hill-sprinkled savana of Namibia and if lucky observing some quaintly dress women here and there. Last approaches to Swakopmund show quick change in surrounding vegetation going from grass covered plain to drab desert somehow defying the theory of mist driven flora hence the closer to the ocean the less of it one can see.

DRIVE SLOW AND SOBER

The police are almost non-existent in Namibia. Even in Windhoek I saw a few only around the Presidential Palace. I did, however, see lots here. In fact I saw the only ‘Traffic Control’ vehicle right near the beach (pictured). In fact, they had a big, busy office next to the Post Office (also pictured). These guys have a reputation for cracking heads and false imprisonment. I recommend you drive at or below the speed limit here. You can drive 200 kph or as fast as your car will go all over the country except here. They also have a prison here.

Plane Service to Swakopmund

The closest airport to Swakopmund is in the town of Walvis Bay some 30 minute drive away. Air Namibia offers regional flights and South African Express Airways offers flights to and from Cape Town and Johannesburg

Roads to Swakomund II

The majority of roads in Namibia are dust roads as you see on this picture. Take good caution when travelling on these roads, particulary at night. Ensure you have the right tyre pressure and do not drive to fast!

The coast can be reached by tarred road from Windhoek. Unfortunatley the country only has got four tarred roads, one connecting the South with the North, the road crossing from the coast via Windhoek to the Botswana border and the road to Luederitz.

We made a 12 days tour by truck from Windhoek to Swakopmund, Skeleton Coast and Etosha National Park. In a group of 12 we slept in tents under the wonderful starry skies of Namibia. A really unforgeteable experience, even the food was great!!

There are a lot of activities to do in Swakopmund, mainly in december (our summer). One of the best is an airplane ride along the Skeleton Coast, the sandy coast northwards from SWK. In 3 hours you pass over Cape Cross Seal Colony, shipwrecks, endless dunes, Damaraland (some giraffes and oryx sometimes)... in a little plane for 5 persons. All for about 100 US$.
