I came upon this family of Giraffes eating together in the Caprivi Strip. Only when you see a whole group of Giraffes (known as a tower) do you realise just how graceful they actually are. They are the tallest living land animal with males growing up to 5.5 metres (18 feet) tall and weighing up to 1,300 kilograms (3,000 pounds). Now that’s big! They also have the shortest sleep patterns of any mammal – just 10 minutes to 2 hours a night. They drink, very carefully, huge amounts of water so that they can range over large dry areas. Males sometimes use their long necks for ‘necking’ which is a form of combat and can even be fatal. They can be found all across Africa, but you will rarely see more than 1 or 2 at a time. I just got lucky here.

Tropics in a desert country

In comparison to the rest of Namibias dry desert this is the subtropical part of the country.
The Caprivi is a narrow strip of land in the far northeast of Namibia, about 400 kilometres long. Germany exchanged the area - together with Helgoland - with the United Kingdom for Zanzibar in 1890. It was named after the German chancellor of the time, Graf von Caprivi, who signed the contract with the British.
The abundance of water in the Caprivi sustains a large variety of animal and bird species. Especially numerous are the elephants, though not easily spotted through the dense vegetation. The wildlife is being protected in a couple of reserves (Bwabwata, Mudumu, Lizauli, Mamili). There are no fences, so the animals can roam freely across the borders of the neighbouring countries of Botswana and Zambia. The Chobe National Park in Botswana, bordering the Caprivi in the south, is especially excellent for game viewing.
The service centre of the Caprivi is the small town of Katima Mulilo at the eastern tip. Katima lies directly on the banks of the Zambezi River and offers some attractive lodges at the river

Mudumu Nationalpark:
It's that part of the country at the north eastern end. You will get there when you pass Caprivi.

It's a very small nationalpark, most people don't know. The only accomodation is Lianshulu Lodge from where you can start guided tours by boat, by landcruise or by feet!
This park is the only one in whole Namibia where it is offically allowed for tourist to walk - accompanied by a local gameguide.
The shows Matthew who is the lodges game guide (and a really good one!) hanging in a Baobab. This majestic tree is in a very bad shape because it had been harmed by elephants.
