Kolmannskop Ghost Town, Namibia

Ghost Town is a diamond-mining town in the desert buried by the white sanddunes. It is incredible to think people living here, in so a difficult place.
I went in a hot day with little wind. But the sand is always trying to win terrain.
There are few house still up, but little by little the houses are falling cause the push of the sand. They are beautiful houses that keep a wonderful fresh temperature inside despite the very height of outside.
It is very curios to learn how they used to live in that hostile place, how every house was given every day a block of ice and lemonade. How women had a little train to move from house to house or to the shop, a train for little distance, that with the heavy dresses they used to wear was a long way always.

The town was build after the discover of diamonds with a school, theatre, gym, with very exclusive houses in a very short time, and was abandoned and became a ghost town after bigger diamonds were found near Oranjemund.

I would make the following recommendation:

Buy your ticket the night before you plan to visit in Luderitz. Then at sunrise head out to the town on your own. You will be able to arrive early and photograph the city just by showing your pass to the man at the gate.

When you buy your pass they do not tell you that you can get in without the tour, therefore most people are luckily discouraged from going while the light is at its best and there are no winds.

Kolmanskop is an interesting quick trip.
It used to be a diamond mining village, but it has long since been abandoned. You can have an interesting guided tour, before going off to explore for yourselves.
All of the old mansions are being taken over by sand which does make for some interesting photos, and all of the equipment is exactly as it was left in the 1950's.
