Pointe-Noire Things to Do

  • Pointe Indienne

This is the weekend place for people of Pointe Noire.Almost all companies have a land there with some bungalows for the entertainment of the staff. The place is very quiet, far from the noisy and crowdy Pointe Noire, although less than 20 km from it.When you reach Pointe Indienne, you see on your left the gas factory. Lots of petrol companies are...

There are only two ways to go from Pointe Noire to Brazzaville: plane or train. Road is out of the question, not only it is in a very bad shape but also roadjackers will stop you.Almost everybody must take the train (that is very often shot). The few days when there is a train, you see thousands of people queuing in the street in front of the...

Pointe-Noire Warnings and Dangers

  • Always rent a car with a known company.

The cost of renting a car in Pointe Noire is prohibitive. The daily price (for long periods!) makes it more interesting to purchase a brand new car from Europe for not more than four months of renting. So make your calculation. Also, because of this juicy business, plenty of people will want to rent their own car. Don't make this mistake. First...

  • Never take pictures

It is not allowed to take pictures in Congo. Everything might be secret defense. All public buildings are secret defense, as well as houses of employees of any governmental office. It means that you can be arrested and kept in jail, of course after confiscation of your material. The best is to have a phone and take pictures secretely. Once in jail,...

  • Never critisize the government.

Whatever you can think about people in the country, never mention the name of the president, or ministers or members of parliament, or police or their relatives: you might be listened by a cleaner and reported. Then the best that can happen to you is deportation, the worse, nobody knows, people just disappear. The country has been USSR satellite...

Pointe-Noire Tourist Traps

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

You will be followed and disturbed by street traders.Once you leave your hotel they will be all over you. Most of the masks are not even produced in Congo. And the first prices are by far too high.Once you bought something somebody will visit you or try to talk you into a written permit which guarantees safe transport of the painting out of the country.Of course this costs additionel money and does not interest the customs at all:-))))

Unique Suggestions: If you don`t want to buy something be strict and even a bit rude.

Fun Alternatives: You can buy all the stuff pretty cheap.Simply bargain.Sooner or later you will get it for a third or less.

Pointe-Noire What to Pack

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Always have good mosquito repellent. The malaria of Congo is bad, sometimes leads to dead.
Take tablets against diarrheas and stomac pain, if you eat in Pointe Noire, you will definitively have a problem.

Very important, don't use deodorant, but put talc under armpits, crotch, feet, all places where you will sweat in your clothes. If not, you will get dangerous fungus, and it is very hard to get rid off.
Shaving: be carefull, same fungus problem.

Miscellaneous: During six months I have been in Pointe Noire, there was not one day I did not wake up with a bleeding nose. Take all vaccines and prevention you can.

    by Alpha_Ghana Written Apr 2, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Fishing is one the possible activities in Pointe Noire. They have some few boats. Go around the Kouillou River and try.
The best places however are udner and around all the platforms.
This is a high sea big fish trip.

If you are lucky you can also see the dolfins.

Equipment: You can find everything if you rent a boat.
