One of the farms we visited the owners were distilling not alcohol or hooch for private consumption as we first guessed but eucalyptis and other tropical plants to make concentrated perfumes and fragrances. It was a pretty fascinating process. The ingredients were growing all around, free for the taking. The finished product is then sold on to manufacturers of various oils, soaps, etc. that need fragrances. A nice little family operation, although it still looked like a home still.

  • Reunion has not one culture but several ones. Here is a island where you can find a real 'melting-pot' of people, a mosaic of traditions : try to discover them all.

  • Reunion is legally a part of France, the way that Hawaii is part of the USA. As a result, French is the official language of the island. Some of the people in hotels and restaurants speak English, but many do not. In addition, almost all of the tourists on Reunion are from France and other French-speaking nations, such as Belgium. If you plan to visit Reunion, brush up on your French. It will make your visit much more enjoyable.
