    Jardin de l'Etat
  • Tip Rating:
  • Jardin de l'Etat is a beautiful botanic garden where you can sit down and relax to collect your thoughts. It has been at its current location since 1773. It has a nice collection of plants and trees from the local islands in the region. There is also a natural history museum located in the gardens.

    St. Denis
  • Tip Rating:
  • Founded in 1668 St. Denis (san-de-nee) is excellent introduction to Reunion and most likely your first. It is very similar to a city in mainland France and there is no other city in the region that compares to it. The northern end of town can keep occupied for a while and is very pedestrian friendly. Another enjoyment of the city is all the Creole architecture.

    Aquarium
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the town of St. Gilles les Bains there is an impressive aquarium complex that is basically an underwater zoo. There are so many aquariums it will take up an hour or two of your time. There is also pretty good souvenir shop attached to the reception area.

    HELL-Bourg
  • Tip Rating:
  • An absolutely beautiful town, Hell-Bourg is anything but what the name suggests. Fresh mountain air and gorgeous scenery make this one of the most pleasant towns on the island. Hell-Bourg is on the Cirque de Salazie so it is well situated for travellers.

    Divine Intervention
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the town of Piton Ste. Rose some believe that devine intervention happened here in 1977. In 1977 a volcano erupted and the lava poured down through the village. Once it came to the church now known as Notre Dame de la Lave the lava literally split about a metre in front of the church and proceded around it on both sides. You now have to walk down a staircase about a metre to the entrance of the church.

    Bassin des Aigrettes
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of my favorite places to go whenever I go back to my homeland =)

There are 3 bassins that you can go and visit. For the moment, le bassin des aigrettes is closed and apparently people don't clean and recycle the water in it. So anyone wanting to go there, inform yourself first if it's open or not. Last time a cousin went and got sick. When it's contaminated it's not worth to swim and jump in it.

Wonderful, wild orchids in the wild, which some of the locals cut and then sell down below in the village of hell-bourg

We reached this spot after hiking for about 2 -1/2 hours. It was a pretty steep climb and very hot out. Some of the trail was shaded, but other parts were not. We were glad to get to the top. Not a long day of hiking, but thirsty work.

I am not an expert on tropical plant species. I am just not that interested in the subject. However, if you are, I would suggest bringing along a field guide so you can identify some of the plants we found along the way.

I was amazed to see wild plants growing to such heights in La Reunion. I have only seen such species in gardens or at home and they are much smaller. Here on the island, they grow wild, they grow everywhere, and they grow bigger than I have ever seen! Imagine bamboo stalks the size of tree trunks.
