I was amazed to see wild plants growing to such heights in La Reunion. I have only seen such species in gardens or at home and they are much smaller. Here on the island, they grow wild, they grow everywhere, and they grow bigger than I have ever seen! Imagine bamboo stalks the size of tree trunks. wonderful, wild orchids in the wild, which some of the locals cut and then sell down below in the village of hell-bourg

I am not an expert on tropical plant species. I am just not that interested in the subject. However, if you are, I would suggest bringing along a field guide so you can identify some of the plants we found along the way. wonderful, wild orchids in the wild, which some of the locals cut and then sell down below in the village of hell-bourg

Wonderful, wild orchids in the wild, which some of the locals cut and then sell down below in the village of hell-bourgWe reached this spot after hiking for about 2 -1/2 hours. It was a pretty steep climb and very hot out. Some of the trail was shaded, but other parts were not. We were glad to get to the top. Not a long day of hiking, but thirsty work.

One of my favorite places to go whenever I go back to my homeland =)There are 3 bassins that you can go and visit. For the moment, le bassin des aigrettes is closed and apparently people don't clean and recycle the water in it. So anyone wanting to go there, inform yourself first if it's open or not. Last time a cousin went and got sick. When it's contaminated it's not worth to swim and jump in it.

HELILAGON- Mindblowing for the eyes to see! -YOU MUST take a helicopter tour to see the beautiful sceneries and mountainous regions of Reunion that you don't see from the ground point of view.Unless you get motion sickness easily, or are afraid of heights, I wouldn't suggest you to go on it.Great experience, great view, great scenery for all you hungry snapshot takers.

Did a weekend hike from the "Maido" peak at 2,200m down to the Mafate valley floor staying at a little village called Cayenne "ilet" or small island. It was well over 32 celcius but with lots of factor 25 sunsreen and plenty of litres of water, the decent was tough but enjoyable , met hardly anybody else on the way down and crossed rivers barefoot as no bridges as yet...Mafate is the most remote french terrain existing...no roads around, only acccess by Helico or by foot. Stayed with J.Pierre and his family and had a wonderful meal of traditional Creole fare and far too much "Rhum arrange"..JP had grown everything from his own land, the duck was prepared a couple of hours before we arrived,as they only go to"town" every 6 months they are impressively self sufficent. We met kids that have never seen the sea, as they are surrounded in a wall of over 2km high of mountain, just to get to...

In the town of St. Gilles les Bains there is an impressive aquarium complex that is basically an underwater zoo. There are so many aquariums it will take up an hour or two of your time. There is also pretty good souvenir shop attached to the reception area.

In the town of Piton Ste. Rose some believe that devine intervention happened here in 1977. In 1977 a volcano erupted and the lava poured down through the village. Once it came to the church now known as Notre Dame de la Lave the lava literally split about a metre in front of the church and proceded around it on both sides. You now have to walk down a staircase about a metre to the entrance of the church.

Jardin de l'Etat is a beautiful botanic garden where you can sit down and relax to collect your thoughts. It has been at its current location since 1773. It has a nice collection of plants and trees from the local islands in the region. There is also a natural history museum located in the gardens.
