HELL-Bourg

by canuckmike

An absolutely beautiful town, Hell-Bourg is anything but what the name suggests. Fresh mountain air and gorgeous scenery make this one of the most pleasant towns on the island. Hell-Bourg is on the Cirque de Salazie so it is well situated for travellers.

St. Denis

by canuckmike

Founded in 1668 St. Denis (san-de-nee) is excellent introduction to Reunion and most likely your first. It is very similar to a city in mainland France and there is no other city in the region that compares to it. The northern end of town can keep occupied for a while and is very pedestrian friendly. Another enjoyment of the city is all the Creole architecture.

The lushy interior of the island of Reunion

by paogg

On the island of Reunion (somewhere between Madagascar and Mauritius) there is just one proper tropical beach, near St Pierre. It's a very nice beach, free, not belonging to a hotel like the best Mauritius ones, sandy, woody and with great sunsets, but the highlight of this island is the volcanic interior. It's almost always covered in clouds but the views are very rewarding when the sun rays manage to penetrate. There are three very large, circular valleys (former volcanoes) with thick vegetation and a few tiny villages established by african slaves escaped from the farms outside. For almost two hundred years some of them managed to hide and survive inside these impenetrable valleys and start a new, free(albeit hard and rather wet!) existence.A few times expeditions were organized to go and look for the fugitives but always unsuccessfully due to the harsh nature of the interior. When at...

Miraculous Church.

Miraculous Church. On the coast road on the West Side of La Reunion, there is this small church. During a eruption, lava streamed till the sea. Church was on the way lava separated in two flows and saved the Church.Everything around the church is under the lava.

La Roche Merveilleuse

by Jonemy

Out of the six of us there, i was the only one brave enough (or stupid enough!) to take the 45 minute treck up this hill (which literally translates out as Marverlous Rock). the track winds uphill, through dence bush - but that didn't stop the "Bonne Sœur" who we (me and the guide Sébastian) passed on our way to the top.And what a sight to behold - a panoramique view across the hidden town of Cilaos. the sight is breathtaking, and one of the most famous images of Réunion. if the 45 minute up-hill stroll doesn't appeal to you, there is a way to get to the top by car. The view is still just as spectacular, but not quite as sweet as if you make the walk.

A sunrise on the circus of Mafate.Wake up at 4:00 to be the first on the top of the circus. Wait facing East and you will see slowly the sun coming around 6:00 A.M. on the other side of the Isle.Magic. Imagine you see a tropical sun in the Alpes.

Mafate :Mafate is very...

by alnoor

Mafate :Mafate is very difficult to access. No road has been built, only walk paths. Being in the western part of the island makes it the driest of the three cirques. A few people live there in small villages. Electricity is provided thanks to generators and solar energy. Fresh supplies for the shops and emergency transports are done by helicopter. If you don't like hiking, you will have a splendid view from the Piton Maïdo, where you can go by car from St Paul. You'd better arrive there early in the morning before the fog appears. Cilaos:This cirque is accessible by car from St Louis, but what a road!! If you usually feel sick on twisty roads, take your tablets with you... Cilaos is well-known for its 'ilets', small tablelands lost between gullies and cliffs like tiny islands. Its thermal sources have made Cilaos famous all around the Indian Ocean. Cilaos embroidery, introduced...
