The hippos are always sunning in the water of the lakes and the rangers know where to see them. A little walk to the marshy waters edge is just as delightful even if you dont seee any but dont fear the hungry hippos will be there. They eat swim sleep and swim again...what a life!

One of the attracitons of the park is the wild elelphant who was actually brought up and tamed by the 'elephant man'...his keeper who is a fisherman near the fihing station onLake Ihema. The large mammal is moody and should not be approached without the park rangers guidance...i forgot the ellies name, but i am sure he didn't forget mine!

78km east of Kigali you reach the literally juntion town of Kayonza. The circle has signs pointing to uganda and tanzania in opposite directions and adds that wild frontier feel to the place. there is accomodation at the aumbebhazi hotel just on the circle, basic but there if you need it.
if you visit duirng Market day which is largest on tuesday the Marche area just north of the centre 200m is a hive of activity and opportunity to see rural life upclose.......great if you are there, but dont detour

the rwamagana Catholic Church is a grand building following the low rise mud houses of the locals..The school nearby and the steeple offer fine photo opprotunities along the journey. Its about 60km form Kigali and offers good access north to Lake Muhazi or south to Akagera..i went south of course

Soon after landing my guide picked me up and we headed to Akagera. The scenery is stunning, hills all the way. I planned it this way so that i could experience Rwanda first then the genocide history..Its definitely worth it to dlve in and then find out later...your perception remains clear and pure
