TRANSPORT TO KIGALI AND BUJUMBURA
Butare is right in the middle of the road journey from Kigali to Bujumbura in Burundi. You are looking at somewhere depending on 2-3.5 hours to each destination and paying much less that $10 to either. Why the difference in travel times? It depends on the safety of the driver. The quick ones may not get you there at all.
Butare is blessed with companies that stop and leave here - but read the whole tip!
I stopped here with twice on the way to and from Kigali and Bujumbura on New Yahoo! Car Express. Other companies include Atraco Express, Volcano Bus and New Yahoo! (bus). These are all quicker and more efficient than local busses/shared taxis. The local ones stop at every bush, tree, markets stall and will pick up ANYONE on the road if the have an empty seat. They also serve as a package delivery and post office delivery vehicle. It could take all day to get to Kigali from here and leave you at the border on the way to Burundi (not recommended). Taking one of the named 'bus lines' means they do not stop except at 1 stop half-way to each destination. Hence the name 'express' that they sometimes use.
OK, the problem.
This is the middle stop in between 2 capital cities. I suggest, unless you want to lose a day here you didn't expect, to make arrangements in Kigali to 'start' your journey here. I don't recommend trying to organise it in Burundi. Speak to and maybe even buy a ticket (if they will do it) in Kigali so then you spend the 1 or 2 nights you want here. Then got onto Bujumbura. Bujumbura to Kigali is 5-7 hours and you organised it the day before.
There are no websites, phone numbers, etc. The main street is about 1 mile long and all the bus stops are within eyesight of each other. The ticket sellers (next to last photo) are easy to spot.Related to:
