The walk along the lakeshore at Gisenyi is sublime . With DRC border on one end and the port at the other its a pleasant stroll. In between the military mess and regal but worn homesteads intermingle with the lake-line.
The area known as the port is really a jetty for a fishing village. The local youth swim while the elderly fish and fix pirouges. From here or via a travel agent you can arrange with a pirouge owner to take you to Kibuye or even as far as Cyangugu southwards. The affair is a worthwhile treat but pricey...bargain hard.
