Carrying plastic bags is a no-no when entering Rwanda. The border police, when on road travel, will ask you to discard any plastic bags you have and transfer all your stuff in a paper bag or be prepared to throw them in the trash lest you carry them bare. Not to worry though, there are enterprising people selling paper bags at the border, just be ready with your Rwandan Francs, though some are willing to accept Kenyan Shillings.

Kigali is the capital of Rwanda and throughout the city and its immediate suburbs, you will notice that the locals are making a serious effort in keeping their place neat and tidy..no litters! I think it is the cleanest place in East Africa.

  • Exzellent Food

    Ruhengeri Restaurants

Many places in Ruhengeni have only buffet which i am not fond if, the La Paillotte has a italian and french menue, pizza, pasta, baguettes and brochettes. I had a Brochette de Bouef which came with Avocadosalade and Frits, i had also a Baguette with lokal Gouda cheese, both where quite goode.

  • Trek to the Mountain Gorillas

    Ruhengeri Things to Do

Visiting the mountain gorillas was an unforgettable experience. There are 18 mountain gorilla groups in Rwanda, 10 of which are visited on a daily basis for 1 hour by 8 tourists each. To protect the gorillas from infection, you do your best to keep 20 feet away, but the gorillas are on the same trails as you are, and will brush by your leg at...

  • Gorilla Tracking

    Kinigi Things to Do

Needless to say of course that the main reason to go to Kinigi is gorilla tracking. This is where the headquarters of the Rwandan Tourism Authority are and this is where all groups start for gorilla tracking.Gorilla tracking is quiet expensive nowdays. It is 500 Dollars at the time of writing. For me it is worth it every cent! Especially because...

  • Getting to Kinigi from Ruhengeri

    Kinigi Transportation

If you wish to visit the gorillas and you are not booked with a travel agent, like I did, you must find your own means to get to the ORTPN (Rwandan Tourism Office) headquarters in Kinigi, where gorilla tracking starts from. The same if you wish to spend the night at the Kinigi guesthouse instead of hotels in Ruhengeri. The regional buses will leave...

  • 4WD required

    Kinigi Transportation

In order to reach the park hotel, you really do need a four wheel drive as the roads are soooo awful. I have seen smoother dried-up river beds; the path really is just a collection of rocks surrounded by potholes, with some very steep sections that make for “interesting” driving!

THE BEST SAMOSAS IN THE WORLD 4 more images

by DAO Updated Jun 4, 2013

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This humble little bakery in Gisenyi makes the absolute BEST Samosas in the entire world! I stopped in just to see what they had on offer and noticed a large basket of samosas in a glass cabinet. I asked for one, expecting a cold, bland snack. Instead I was given a hot, fresh, meat samosa that absolutely exploded with flavour in my mouth. Super delicious! It was spicy, but not hot. They had just made them and I went back for more! I have travelled the world and I can assure you these are the best Samosas I have ever had.

For those not familiar with samosas, they are triangular pastries filled with meant and/or vegetables. Their name derives from a Persian word and were probably invented in Central Asia. And now you know where you can get the best samosas!

Boulangerie de Gisenyi also makes fresh bread, sell canned foods and have cold soft drinks. For a budget traveller this is a good place to get supplies.

    Favorite Dish:
A cold apple juice and some wonderful warm meat Samosas made in Heaven.

    Virunga Off The Beaten Path

Well that's a one day track you could to if you are in top shape and acclimatized to the altitude. It's about 10 -12 hours climbing to the Muhabura pick at 4100m, and the air is very thin there. Seriously i believe this is better done in two days but such option does not exist. Don't dream of doing it on the first day you arrive.

You just simply cannot get around paying the $600 for an hour visit with the gorillas. Nor should you. Your money does indeed go to the rangers and park personnel in charge of protecting the Gorillas. Now, I am not a hippy tree-hugging, save-the whales, kind of guy. But, even I know that this is a worthwhile undertaking. If you have seen the video...
