Traffic

The city is generally safe but watch out when you cross the street. Coming from Bangkok myself, when I say it's crazy, believe me, it really is! Not only there's no way they would stop a car and let you like some countries in Europe. They also try their best to hit you. So please watch carefully at both directions.

"Yes, Sir, I Will Need Some Help!"

by LBKesner

I am motivated by challenges, so when our group leader--innocently and with nothing in mind other than my best interest--suggested that I might want to go with the group doing the "less challenging" climb, I was determined to make the harder climb or die trying. Suffice it to say, I almost died trying, but I am glad that I made the climb--in small chunks of climbing with oh-so-frequent breaks that must have been burdensome to the in-shape hikers with goat-like agility. I am also proud that the nice man in the picture ignored us when we said, "No thanks, we won't need any help carrying our backpacks or water." So, he was there when it became very apparant to me that, yes, I would benefit from his services! This revelation came on the walk from the bus to the base of the mountain, Bisoke Mountain--even before I had ever started doing any actual climbing! When you begin your trek up a...

BE CAREFULThe country is coming out of a period of unbelievable violence. Many people have nothing left. we are all rich to the locals. Having said that, the locals are friendly and hospitable, just keep in the open.Hitchiking is easy but some of the driving is scary.Rwanda is mountainous which means lots of tight, turning roads with big cliff faces. The roads are often wet, it is rainforest country, and the drivers like to drive as if its straight and dry. We skidded out of control into a cliff face on one bend, if we spun the other way it was 1000m straight down. Did it slow our driver down...not one bit.

Don't drink the water, Don't...

by Muzungu

Don't drink the water, Don't eat ANY uncooked food including fruits & veg (I've had the Meeb it will ruin your stay) Take your anti-malaria drugs seriously, Watch for Black Mambas etc, Rent a 4x4 with driver if you can, Corruption is official business at times, Don't take pictures of soliders or military sites. Be aware that Interhamwe insurgents still attack from time to time, the bastards responciable for the Genocide.
