Ascension has a lot of activities and you can probably do most of them in two days if you wanted. You have the beach, snorkeling, diving, hiking, off-roading, fishing, and other normal activities. Green mountain the surrounding hills are pleasant hikes. Fishing is really popular here and its easy to catch fish. Also the sea turtles come and lay their eggs on Ascension.
ASCENSION FRIGATEBIRD The Ascension Frigatebird is endemic to Ascension Island and breeds at only one location - Boatswainbird Island. The population is thought to number about 10,000 birds. Ascension Frigatebirds can be seen around all coasts of the island. They are easiest to see in the North-east Bay area, where birds can be seen flying along the coast to and from Boatswainbird Island. Better views can be obtained from Letterbox where frigatebirds can be seen roosting on the cliff tops, or alternatively from a boat trip around Boatswainbird Island
RED-BILLED TROPICBIRDThe three species of tropicbird all have tropical distributions. Two species are found in the tropical Atlantic and both breed on Ascension Island, with the majority of both species breeding on Boatswainbird Island. The most numerous is the Yellow-billed Tropicbird, or Boatswainbird (so called because its call is likened to that of a Bosun's whistle) after which the island was named. About 1,000 pairs of Yellow-billed tropicbirds and 500 pairs of Red-billed Tropicbirds breed on Ascension. The Yellow-billed Tropicbird can be separated from the Red-billed Tropicbird by several characteristics: - the bill colour, if it can be seen, is a giveaway - the Yellow-billed Tropicbird has two thick, black, bars on each wing, while the inner wing of the Red-billed Tropicbird is finely barred black. - the Yellow-billed Tropicbird is a smaller bird than the Red-billed Tropicbird.
Fishing Fishing is a very popular pastime on Ascension, both as a hobby and to supplement the diet and many people fish either from the shore or boats. The waters around the island host a wide variety of fish. Offshore can be found such species as Tuna, Wahoo, Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado and Shark; And Inshore can be found Grouper, Bullseye and Conger Eel. There are several skippered boats (with fishing gear included) available to hire at very reasonable rates.
