    Backpack is the best, absolutely.

If you move by car(which is a best way), you have to buy a map, because there are no road signs. You can get the map from the main post office(avenida 12 de julho). Inside the office there is a little gift-shop, that is the only place to get a decent map. Map is a blueproof print and hand coloured! The pic is seen in the intro page.

Good pair of walking shoes, because the roads and streets are in very bad condition.

Malaria medication is recommended(and painkillers), and your own needles, if you hurt yourself and need stitches.
There are no public toilets, so keep always some paper with you.

Electricity is often off, so load your batteries always when it is possible.
Bring your own films(expensive there and hard to find).

There are no camping places, but on the northcoast is possible to rent a hut(made of palm leafs) on the beach for a few dollars. It is very outdoor...

Best beaches are on the north coast, but you need a car to get there(or you can walk on the waterfront up north, distances are not so long).

Backpack is the easiest because you might to transfer a lot in Sao Tome and backpacks aree easier to hanlde in jeeps than luggages.

    Good walking shoes or sandals.

Take all your films or DVD cassette with you in advance. Sao Tome provides very little of.

mosquito net - usable even you do not like to camp outdoor.

    Map of Sao Tome.
You will like to rent a car, and with car you like to know where you like drive. Sao Tome provides very little of maps .
Every luxury things - like at Survivor TV serie.
Sun tan piz buiz, tooth brush jelly like Pepsodent, razors and razor foam like Gillette etc.

    Cockroach killer foam
Essentially at every accommodation - from budget to top. When entering the room - indipendent the class - just foam all the floor and wall sections, specially the toilet.

  • Small carry on bag in good condition, and bring a pad lock .

Light cotton clothing ,hat and sun screen.sun glasses, batteriesfor flashlight. Three sets of clothing, Most everything can be purchased in town but not much selection.

Bring Bug repellant (DEET) asprins.bandaids, skin cream, maybe toilet paper to be on the safe side. Most everything can be bought, but not a lot to choose from.

Small camera with film. Film is very expensive and out of date. Remember to ask befor taking photos of anyone and do not take pictures that can be classed as military objectives.

There are some beaches out side of town that are good.Watch where you walk, some have sharp coral under the surface. Most of the children do the swimming, and they are naked and are not bashful or shy.You however are expected to wear proper swim suits.

Sao Tome & principe is good to relax and enjoy the sights and the people. It is not much for night life or exictement. There are some beautiful women and friendly. Sao is off the usual tourist track, but in my opinion its a great place to mingle and interact with the locals and learn about them. They will be interested in hearing about you as well.
