Climb Pico de Sao Tomé, the highest mountain in Sao Tomé 2024 meters or 6640 feet it will take two or three day and is a beautiful hike. During the climb one needs to climb several smaller mountains before you get to Mesa where you stay overnight. This VTer would recommend a guide for this trip. On the way up you pass through three climate zones and get to see real tropical Jungle with amazing trees and plants. This Jungle is considered by the scientists who study this stuff very important in fact one of the two most important in Africa because of the variety of plant life. I was told over 800 local plants of which more than 100 are only in Soa Tome. If you are an Orchid lover or a begonia person this is heaven they have a 10 foot over three meter high begonia. Also Birds wow what a place about 60 types of which 15 0r twenty are right here in São Tomé |

Fort São Sebastião, built in 1575 and now the São Tomé National Museum is a really beautiful example of a well preserved 16th century Portuguese colonial fort. The real think is the fort itself to see but the Museum does have some interesting history of Sao Tome. The trip to the coffee plantation of Monte Café on Sao Tome is well worth the trip it happens to be the highest plantation on the island and the folks that live in the area are member of authentic Creole culture that did not leave for Portugal at independence. This was the biggest and most rich plantation in its hay day and one can still see the operation of a coffee plantation. you get the chance to see old plantation of Monte Café. Also, there is a beautiful waterfall on this trip where you sit watch the Saint Nicolas' waterfall and sip your coffee. |

The capital is quite small and flat, representing some of the great achievements of the colonialist architecture of the Portugal. There are actually no obvious attractions for tourists. Major festival is the Independence Day 12th July, when locals arrange parade and both historical and myth scenes played in streets. After some wandering around the capital town, you will remark that there are very few groceries also. Actually there is only one in the middle of capital centre, which sells even ham and cheese. |
