Dakar is an important port
Dakar is one of the most important ports of Africa and for that reason you will find vehicles of all sorts there, waiting to be shipped to other ports in Africa or the rest of the world.
I saw military trucks and also broken UNvehicles, trucks and buses from germany and all other parts of the world.
The Grand Mosque
The Grand Mosque of Dakar is a sight that you will be able to see in some distance already from your ship, when you arrive in the port of Dakar.
Non-moslems are not allowed to enter that mosque, but on my Bustour through Dakar we were taken there as well and could take at least some Pictures from outside of the impressive building.

Baobab ( Adansonia digitata )
"Baobab" is the local Name for this tree that is so typical for the african Savanna. It has mostly quite a thick trunk: so the average hight of such a tree is around 18 meters and the trunk has a diametre of 10meters.
Africanischer Affenbrotbaum is the german Name and in latin: Adansonia digitata
We saw that tree opposite of the Monument de la Renaissance africaine.
a tiny mosque
We saw this tiny mosque next to the marchee des artisants and it was even possible to go inside, after we had left our shoes in the entrance-area. unfortunately it was much too dark inside to take photos.
The Dakar Railway Station
Dakar is the end of the Dakar–Niger Railway between Koulikoro in Mali and Dakar with a total length of 1287km, and its construction started at the end of the 19th century and was finished in 1924.
Not far from the port of Dakar you will find that trainstation. The Dakar–Niger Railway was mainly used for the transportation of goods between the Niger river and the port of Dakar , but its service ended in 2010.
Gorée - the slave island
Goree is a small island not far from the port of Dakar and you will pass by it, when your cruiseship enters or leaves the port of Dakar.
From the distance you will see the round fortification, where untill 1848 thousands of slaves had been held in prison before they were taken by ship to America.
You can go there several times a day by Ferry and one of the tours by our cruiseship did go there as well, but I did not have enough time for that.

Amazing natural resource
The Lac Rose is not so much "off the beaten path" but it is located outside of the city so walking is not an option. There are still several vendors selling their touristy wares. It is amazing to see how the salt is harvested.

Located just off the coast near Dakar, Goree Island houses a slave museum. This is where soon to be exported slaves were held in incubation before departing for far destinations.
