The Lac Rose is not so much "off the beaten path" but it is located outside of the city so walking is not an option. There are still several vendors selling their touristy wares. It is amazing to see how the salt is harvested.

Located just off the coast near Dakar, Goree Island houses a slave museum. This is where soon to be exported slaves were held in incubation before departing for far destinations.
