This tree is the Queen of savannah in western Africa, dominating the savannah. The tree has a trunk in the shape of a bottle and branches that look like roots, so strange that originated a legend in which the gods planted the tree upside down. But the singularity of this tree doesn't end here and the mystic that surrounds the tree is so strong that it even was elevated to national symbol in Senegal. Some baobabs live around 2000 years and the strange thing is that with ageing the tree turns more compact, gaining a diameter of almost 10 meters. The importance that the baobab represents for the inhabitants of the savannah, threaten by the desert, is very well illustrated by the fact that an adult specimen can contain around 120 000 liters of water. The uses for this tree are numerous: it's fruit, known as monkey bread, is part of the local diet, as well as it's leafs and several other other things. Leave a Comment

This handsome Presidential Palace dates from 1906 and is surrounded by a sumptuous tropical garden. It was the Governor's Palace during the colonial era The Red Guards are responsible for the security. The Palace is not open to visits and I seriously advise anyone to ask for authorization before you take a picture of it. After all this is Africa!!! Leave a Comment

France has a colonial past and Nantes, my home town, was one of the main towns from slave trade. When I went to Dakar, I was five and had no historical knowledge. What I saw was just pure absurdity. Remember I asked my dad why there where balls and chains locked on the walls and him explaining me we that was to avoid slaves to leave the island. Felt sad and did not understand how such a beautiful island could be the place of such horror. A must go. To never forget the absurdity and horror of slavery. Leave a Comment

Goree is an island off the coast of Dakar. It was used as a stop between Africa and the 'New World' for slaves. It has many historic buildings and museums that are open to the public. Directions: Take a ferry from downtown Dakar to the island.

After a couple of Kms outside Dakar the road that leads to Lac Rose turns to be a difficult road for a normal car. My advice is to use a 4x4 vehicule and thus not getting into trouble. Leave a Comment

This is considered to be the most typical market of Dakar. Well, it has the same chaotic display as the others. In this market they sell pearls and necklaces, and clay pottery, among other different things. Leave a Comment

Institut Fondamental d'Afrique Noir. An interesting museum with an overview of African art. It's pretty old-fashioned, but that makes it more charming (in my opinion). No English-language explanations when we visited, though (in 2003). There was a temporary exhibition by local artists on the top floor. Address: Place de Soweto
