One of the most frequently visited sites is the Maison des Esclaves (Slave House), a poignant reminder of Goreé's role as the center of West African slave trade. Built by the Dutch in 1776, the slave house has been preserved in its original state. Other points of interest include the Church, the picturesque ruins of Fort Nassau, Saint Michel (the Castle) and the Historical Museum in the old Fort Estrees. There is a small swimming beach near the ferry slip. Leave a Comment

We visited the park in november 2004. We knew allready, that the orginal elephant population of the park was disappeared, but we red that a new herd of elephants was been brought to the park. In the park we found out, that there was not yet any new elephant arrived. They told us, that, allthough it was arranged, that 70 elephants could come, they didn't come. The reason was, that the ecologists said there must at least be a start with 130 elephants. So we didn't see any elephant along the river or at any other place in the park. Leave a Comment Directions: The Park is in the south east of Senegal, about 550 KM from Dakar and 70 KM south east of Tambacounda.

There is not much to see in Tambacounda, except the markets and lively streetlife. We spent a few hours in Tambacounda, because one of the cars had to be repaired. Except some shopping and a visit to the internetcafé, we didn´t do much more than sit along the street and look to what was going on. For me it´s always interesting, just to sit and to look at the African streetlife like the streetstalls, horsescarts and people walking by. We saw these ladies with very beautiful dresses, so we wondered ourselves for which occasion they would be so dressed up? Leave a Comment Directions: Tambacounda lies in the flat savannah area of south east Senegal.

In the Simenti area are a lot of marshes and ponds. The most marshes are situated in abandoned riverbeds. Around the marches the vegetation is very variable, depending on the height of the depression, water level, and soil structure. The ponds are mostly bordered by dry forests or herbaceous savannas. We didn't see huge amounts of animals during our morning game drive on our way out of the park, this gave us a chance to have a closer look at the vegetation. Tambacounda, regional capital, is the biggest town in the south east of Senegal. Tambacounda is a typical crossroad town on the way from Dakar in the west to Mali in the east. To the south the main road split up to Niokolo Koba Park and Guinee in the south-east and to Zinguinchor in the south-west. It is very easy to find your way in town. The two main avenues are the east/west mainroad along the railway and trainstation (from where two trains weekly depart to Dakar) and the main road to the south. Along these mainroads you find the most shops , banks and restaurants. Leave a Comment Directions: Tambacounda lies 465 KM south east of Dakar.

Allthough there are about 80 species of mammals, 330 species of birds, 36 reptiles and 20 amphibians in the park, we didn't see many animals during our visit. We did see some antilopes and the giant derby eland, but all at rather big distance. There are also leopards, lions, buffalos, crocodiles and hippos in the park, but we didn't see them. The only animal we saw very close was this male baboon, just beside the track. Leave a Comment Directions: The Niokolo Koba Park is about 70 KM south east of Tamabcounda.
