Langue de Barbarie National Park

by traveldave

The 4,942-acre (2,000-hectare) Langue de Barbarie National Park is located at the mouth of the Senegal River in northern Senegal. The park encompasses the southern tip of the Langue de Barbarie Peninsula, a portion of the mainland, and two small islands in the river's estuary. The main attraction here is the large amount of water birds such as pelicans, cormorants, herons, egrets, flamingos, gulls, terns, and numerous species of shorebirds. Many of the birds nest on the islands near the mouth of the river. A good way to see these birds up close is to take one of the boat rides offered by locals.

A safari in the middle of Senegalese savannah

by WanderingFinn

During our vacation in Gambia we made a two-day trip to the neighbouring country Senegal. One of the best activities was the wildlife savannah:We jumped in to trucks and started to drive towards - nothing, first via a path, then the driver turned away to drive in the middle of the savannah with no road at all. It was quite bumpy.Nothing could hold our joy when our local lookout informed he had seen antilopes. Yes, we saw them near! Then to the path again. And soon...wild forest pigs. But when the driver started to drive after a group of buffalos everybody was taken. Still the biggest animals where somewhere. Suddenly huge rhinoceroses were standing on our side - cameras were actively in use. We missed the giraffes as they were not up and eating; they were laying down somewhere. Even to see the nature itself, the savannah, was an experience.

Tambacounda, crossroad town

by sachara

Tambacounda, regional capital, is the biggest town in the south east of Senegal. Tambacounda is a typical crossroad town on the way from Dakar in the west to Mali in the east. To the south the main road split up to Niokolo Koba Park and Guinee in the south-east and to Zinguinchor in the south-west.It is very easy to find your way in town. The two main avenues are the east/west mainroad along the railway and trainstation (from where two trains weekly depart to Dakar) and the main road to the south. Along these mainroads you find the most shops , banks and restaurants.

Saly: Largest Seaside Resort In West Africa!

by kucha

Take an overnight trip -- or spend your whole trip in -- the sleepy little seaside town, located in the "Petite Côte" region, 50 miles away from Dakar. Although I describe it as "sleepy", Saly is actually the largest seaside resort in West Africa! It offers numerous excursions, including: Joal Fadioul or "l'Ile aux coquillages" (Seashell Island), to meet the fishermen of Mbour and to go to the Saloum Islands; as well as Dakar, Gorée Island and the "Lac Rose" (the Pink Lake). This town even serves as a base for pirogue fishing or exploring the wilderness of the Bandia Forest.

Very unusual staircase

by cadzand

Very unusual staircase in one of the houses in St. Louis. Here was made the film 'Les caprices d'un fleuve' with the french actor Bernard Giraudeau. There is some resemblance with the one in the famous house of slaves in Gorée, an island in front of Dakar.

Goreé Island

by Wafro

Goreé Island, rich in history, is probably the most famous tourist attraction in Senegal. One of the most frequently visited sites is the Maison des Esclaves (Slave House), a poignant reminder of Goreé's role as the center of West African slave trade. Built by the Dutch in 1776, the slave house has been preserved in its original state. Other points of interest include the Church, the picturesque ruins of Fort Nassau, Saint Michel (the Castle) and the Historical Museum in the old Fort Estrees. There is a small swimming beach near the ferry slip.

Baobabs

by Winksc

There everywhere. The bark can make rope. The leaves make a spicy sauce. the wood is so dense that it wont burn. which probably helps because much of senegals countryside burns away in brush fires during the early months and grows back after the rainy season.

Visit of Bantam

by sachara

Along the alternative unpaved road on our way back to Gambia, we stopped at the small village, called Bantam. In the sandy villagecentre along the road the people were gathered, mostly women and children. They were dancing and we could participate. I always enjoy the African drumming and dancing, especially in those times, because I was trying to learn it myself, doing some courses.

Unpaved road passing the villages

by sachara

We visited the south-east part of Senegal in an one day trip, coming from the Gambia. On our way back to Gambia we didn't take the tarred main road like in the morning, but a sandy track a few KMs more west. They told us, that this track was very known and popular by smugglers. We liked to drive this unpaved road, especially because of the many lovely villages along this dusty track.
