Beautifull beaches and ..

by sachara

Near Kafountine are beautifull beaches. Kafountine is a large village with some very nice hotels and campements. Because of the ''separist problems'' Kafountine remained a tranquil place with a very nice rural atmosphere instead of the planned large-scale development to a nwe costal resort. So it's worth to go there now ... It's also possible to book workshops in drumming and dancing in Kafountine and Abene.Picture:On the beach near the Hotel le Karone we were the only visitors except ... this pelican of the house.

Kailo village

by sachara

Kailo is one of the small villages at the islands in the Casamance riverland. In the traditional villages at the islands most people are for daily food dependent on the river: fish, oysters, crabs, shrimps. The people of the Casamance are known of their kind and relaxed life-style and friendly approach towards strangers. From the beginning of the eighties there were revolts of the "Mouvement des Forces Démocratiques de la Casamance'' . These ''separist problems'' caused the flying of people to Gambia or Guinee-Bissau and the dwindling of the tourist numbers in this popular area. Since the ceasefire of 1993 it takes a lot of time before the level of the eighties will be reached again.

Visit to small villages on the islands.

by sachara

One of the best things to do in Africa is to meet the beautifull and friendly people. In the riverlands of the Casamance we didn´t make only boattrip in the ecologically interesting area of the mangorve, but we had also the chance to visit a small village at one of the islands. The only way to go there, was by pirogue. When we approached the landing stage of the village, we saw a lot of kids welcoming us.

Swamps, mangroves and creeks: by piroque

by sachara

The best way to visit the area of the Casamance river is by pirogue. The ecological environment is impressive: a labyrinth of creeks and islands with mangrove, palm groves, swamps, forests and estuary vegetation. In the dry season there are millions of migratory birds.

Tambacounda, streetlife

by sachara

There is not much to see in Tambacounda, except the markets and lively streetlife. We spent a few hours in Tambacounda, because one of the cars had to be repaired. Except some shopping and a visit to the internetcafé, we didn´t do much more than sit along the street and look to what was going on. For me it´s always interesting, just to sit and to look at the African streetlife like the streetstalls, horsescarts and people walking by. We saw these ladies with very beautiful dresses, so we wondered ourselves for which occasion they would be so dressed up?

Niokolo Koba Park, swamps and ponds

by sachara

In the Simenti area are a lot of marshes and ponds. The most marshes are situated in abandoned riverbeds. Around the marches the vegetation is very variable, depending on the height of the depression, water level, and soil structure. The ponds are mostly bordered by dry forests or herbaceous savannas. We didn't see huge amounts of animals during our morning game drive on our way out of the park, this gave us a chance to have a closer look at the vegetation.

Niokolo Koba Park, early morning game drive

by sachara

After spending the night in the Simenti Hotel we did an early morning gamedrive at 7 pm, before we continued our trip to Mali.Of course we went to the river again, because at the waterside you will have the biggest chance to spot animals. We saw a lot of tracks, but no animals at this spot. But the view was nice. Above the water it was a bit hazy in the early morning light. Later in the savannah area we saw some antilopes and warthogs, but all very far. So we decided to drive rather straight to the exit of the park.

Niokolo Koba Park, sunset at the Gambia River

by sachara

Not far from Camp de Lion the guide allowed us again to leave the car and go down along a steep slope to the river. At this point of the Gambia River were some rapids. It was a pity, that we didn't see any crocodiles or hippos here, but anyway it was a great place to see the beautiful sunset !

Niokolo Koba Park, sunset near Camp de Lion

by sachara

After we arrived in the restaurant of the Simenti Hotel and had a drink, we made a late afternoon gamedrive with our own cars. The Simenti area is very scenic. We took a look at Camp de Lion, where we could spend the night in our own tents. We looked around a bit and could walk down to the Gambia River. It's great to be at the river bank at dusk, just before the sunset.

Niokolo Koba Park, Dar-Salam park entrance

by sachara

We entered the Niokolo Koba Park at the Dar Salam entrance. It is the first entrance coming from Tambacounda at the right hand side of the road. Look carefully, it's signposted, but also easily missed. The daily entrance fee was 2000 CFA per person and 5000 CFA per vehicle. At the entrance we hired a guide to show us the way and bring us to the places with a chance to see the animals.
