Villages in the border with Mali

by johnsakura

On the eastern part of senegal all the way down on the Senegal river bank begining in Matam, you have hundreds of little villages like this one on the picture that will make you think and be sure you are in Africa. These are very poor and lonely villages where people dont have access to basic things in life. I stoped in some of the villages and some children saw a white man for the first time on their lives.

Marche Sandanga-Dakar

by johnsakura

This is the most warm, strong, chaotic, cheerful, noisy, stinkful, dark market I've been to. This is a must while visiting the big city. You can buy almost everything in this big centreville 2 flights building market.

Dakar

by johnsakura

Dakar is West Africa westernmost point and is indeed the most westernized capital cities in West Africa. Dakar suffered from many differnent influences but hte main one was from the late french colonialists. This city is a monster in african terms, the city has more tha a million habitants. As I arrived I got a shock of choatic mess along its thousands of cars and people walking all around. Dakar is the perct place to buy and walk in confusion confronting west african typical chaotic way of life. Dakar start getting some development right after Ile de Goree lost its comercial importance back in 1857.This picture was taken from the top of Hotel Independence which has a very nice pool and terrace from where you can see the whole city from the top. You just have to pay for a drink and stay there relaxing and if you want using the cleaned swiming pool.

Goree Island streets

by johnsakura

This is a very special place just 20 minutes boat ride from Dakar's port. This island is 800mx300m and was a very important slave-trading port. UNESCO protects it already since afew years and still many parts of the island is in rebuilt to improve quality. On the picture you have a view of the old colonialist streets of the Goree Island. Back in 1850 the island had a population of 6000, ten times the present numbers. Dakar started to develope after Goree got forgotten and slowly disapeared in the commerc route in 1857.

If you go without your car or if you go with scehduled time, please make sure you dont miss this part of the Park. In the park there are many areas you have to choose to visit and unless you have a 2 weeks to explore everything, you'll have to choose some parts to visit. his is the part where the rivers Gambia and river Niokolo Koba get together. Its usually the place where almost 10 up to 20 hippos are. You shouldnt miss this.

Termites "Cathedrals"

by johnsakura

There exists more than 1500 species of termites in Senegal. The shape of the "house of the termites depends on the species, but also on the nature of the ground.Giant "Termitières", still called cathedrals or macrotermes, they can reach 7m top. The trees can push in the vicinity or even inside. The alive "termitières" are recognizable on their irregular surface. The dead termitières are very resistant and can be used as building material.

Mali border

by johnsakura

If you dont have in your plans to go to Mali you should just go to the bridge that separates both countries. You have to ask permission to the senagalese police officer and tell him you will just be right back! hahaham yes this is true, i just told the police officer i was just checking something on the other side and he let me go witouhg having seen my papers or car documents. Incredible indeed. Either the way, I did come back... I went to talk to the Mali police officer on the other side which also was a bit confused about me being there just to say hello to him.
