Kidira city border with Mali

by johnsakura

well, why do I put this as a must see activity tip? This is one of the most dirty and chaotic places in the whole country and thats because its the border city of Mali and Senegal. You have lots of markets and open restaurants and cafes to attend truck drivers and people passing the border. This is also one of the first stops for people coming from Mali that which to change train to bus (faster) to other parts of senegal.

by johnsakura

This is a very interesting place to hung out for a couple of hours seing how people go along with eachother. Fishermen usually go to the sea in the morning and come back late afternoon 1 or 2 hours before sun set. This is located on the Langue de Barbarie, one of the most animated places in whole St. Louis. This is located in Ndar Tout area on the left side of the big marketafter the bridge of Moustaph Malick Gaye.

National Park Niokolo Koba

by johnsakura

Parc National de Niokolo Koba is one of the few places in Senegal that belong to the UNESCO programme for World Heritage. The park is open during the dry season and this is the best time to visit it cos you can apreciate animal near water courses and all.You can go to the park with a small car but for the majority of tracks inside it, you need a 4WD car or just going there with the trucks given by the park for payed excursions. On the picture you have the entrance sign at Dar Salam town jus before the Park entrance about 70km away from Tambacounda. There are many large species of animals: buffalos, hartebeeste, shaggy Defassa waterbuck, bushbuck, antilope harnache or guib, warthogs, crocodiles and hippos; roan antelopem wetsern giant eland. and chimpazees. Some people say lions and elephants can be rarely be seen, although my guide told me its not true. Leopards can be seen a at least 3...

At about 60 km north of St. Louis visit the Parc national du Djoudj : 12.000 ha for bird watching. It is the third ornithological park in the world on one of the meanders of the Senegal river with its permanent water level. For the birds, migrating from north to south, it is the first area where they find water after the Sahara drought. Thousands of pelicans, flamingos and more than 400 other species have their nest here.It has been classified as a world heritage by UNESCO.

A view on St Louis from the Langue de Barbarie. From here you can reach the town by foot (4 km), by carriage or by taxi. Travelling by carriage is certainly a must do. especially through the crowdy fishermen's village of Guet N'Dar. The name "Senegal" is said to come from the Wolof (=language) name of the dugout canoe.

Fishermen having a little break. One of the most important activities is fishing as well in the river as in the ocean. It is an all-day occupation on the Senegal river. Observing the fishermen along the ocean in the evening is worthwhile if only for the sake of the sight of the pirogues when they break through the bore.

Guet N'Dar, a crowdy but worthwhile fishing port and village between St. Louis and the hotel area. Near the village is a nice resting place for those who are staying there : a military and fishermen's cimetary with a view on the river.A joke for the frenchspeaking people: Quel est l'arbre que l'on trouve dans tous les cimetières au Sénégal ? L'oranger........ Pourquoi ? Parce que os rangés...

Faidherbe-bridge mystery

by cadzand

Faidherbe Bridge : 500 metres long, entirely designed by the Eiffel company (France) in metallic girders. Built in 1897, it is said to have been designed to span across ...the Danube in Europe !!!I never understood how this bridge has been transported here then. Though if you know Louis Faidherbe was the St. Louis governor between 1854 and 1865.....For french-speaking people : Pourquoi est-ce le pont le plus léger au monde ? Parce que fait d'herbe...

Hotel de la Poste

by cadzand

Situated near the river and the Faidherbe bridge and the 'the place to be' in the center of St. Louis. Mermoz, who made the first flight from St. Louis across the ocean, stayed in room nr. 33. Sip a tea or have a refreshment at the terrace and feel the bustling atmosphere at the Place de Lille and the riverside. The hotel has also an extension (camp) on the much quieter end of the Langue de Barbarie.
