Border Mauritania-Senegal

by johnsakura

This is well known to be the worst place to enter Senegal. From all border passages, the border here in Rosso is quite messy and full of currupt police officers in both sides, Mauritania and Senegal. Coming from Mauritanian Rosso, you have to make all your documents signed from the head cheef police, and remember not to give your passport to the wrong guy, it can just disapear. give your passport when 2 people police men are with you, foloow them even if they say you can't pass, this way you can always follow them and when someone blocks your entry say lowdly they have your passports to stamp! this way everyone will know reducing the probabilities of getting your pasport robbed and being ripped of for it to appear again.after Mauritanian formalities you have to get a boat to Senegalese Rosso which will cost you 1500UM for a veicule and plus 500UM for each passanger. On the Senegalese side...

Transport????

by Wafro

When you’re traveling in Senegal and you’ll use the public transport, you’ll have to be very patient. You’ll also need a bit of luck to arrive at your destination in time, without any car problems or accidents. The buses, taxis and tro-tros are like the streets old and unreliable.Have fun and good luck.

Hire a taxi or take the local bus

by cadzand

The best way is to hire a taxi or make a deal with a local to drive you around. They know their region and drive you where you want to be. Don't be afraid of the poor condition of the cars. If you choose the local busses, take your time. They stop anywhere, whenever someone lifts his hand. It's great fun and at least you'll travel amongst the locals.

by Mash

I think the only way to get nearly everywhere is to go by collecting-taxi. But it needs a lot of time for a few kilometers and you dont belive how much people can get in such a taxi. Some of the drivers are starting the motors and tell you that they leave now, but mostly it´s just a trick to get you into the car. Usually you´ll wait about one to three hours before you leave the station.

The best way to get around are those minibuses for short distance. They stop wherever you want and are truly cheap. For longer distances you should take one of the overland taxis. It's not fun to go in them, but it's a fast way and it is better than taking a bus.

By airplane of course. It is possible from Europe to ferry you car to Morroco and then drive all the way to Senegal. But the disputed territories south of Morroco are a hassle to cross. Not for beginners.I took a 15 hour bush taxi ride from Dakar to Ziguinchor. It meant crossing 3 immigration and police controls. And back in Casamance, a number of 'are they really who they say they are ?' military controls. As you must know, Casamance has some minor problems with the independentist movement. So the best way to go there is by taking the speed boat from Dakar. The Kassoumay can be boarded in the 'port autonome' of Dakar, mole 3. Call one of these numbers to reserve tickets: 821 0707 or 823 3181.

minibusses

they are brightly colored, making up for the sometimes aged engine and traces of past crashes, cheap and help you to get around - Senegalese minibusses.
