The beaches of Cousin are among the main breeding grounds in the western part of the Indian Ocean for the endangered Hawksbill turtle.
Female hawksbills lay up to six times a season, at fourteen day intervals. Tagged turtles return every two to three years.
No Cousin tagged turtle has ever been recorded as nesting anywhere else.

On our guided tour around the island, I glanced out to the beach just in time to catch the sight of a Hawksbill turtle coming ashore.
