 | Seychelles Off the Beaten Path | Tips 1 - 10 of 37 | | Silhouette Island is the third largest granitic island of the Seychelles, situated 19 miles North West of Mahe(15 mn by helicopter). Silhouette's forest remains one of the least interfered with natural habitats in the region, and provides an ideal escape for nature lovers. The pictures shows the island in the background from mahe. If you explore the islands - either by bus, walking, driving a car or with a bike - you'll find places where you get the impression, you are the only one on this island. Especially on Mahe we found so many nice beaches which "belonged" totally to us! Great! And the nature of Seychelles is indiscibable anyway! Go and breathe it into your body and try to keep it within your heart! Leave a Comment

The Seychelles is a birdwatcher's paradise, with its exotic mix of endemic species, African land birds and the seabirds of the Indian Ocean. You will see Cattle Egrets so tame that they are standing on the fiish stalls in the main market of Victoria and ground doves that will jump onto your restaurant table. As you sail between the islands you will see huge flocks of graceful, Fairy Terns and Sooty Terns, as well as the occasional White-tailed Tropicbird. On land you can see endemic species only found in the Seychelles, such as the Seychelles Bulbul and Seychelles Sunbird. So, make sure you pack a pair of binoculars and enjoy the wonderful birds of the Seychelles. Oh, and yes, I did use a zoom lens to take this picture. The birds are not that tame! Located in the hills of Anne Royale, Mahe is Le Jardin du Roi. it is a sprawling garden with a lot of spice plants such as cardamon, cloves, nutmeg, vanilla, and cinnamon. There is also a small museum and a few birds. This pair of flying foxes is also taking a nap here. A small creperie serves sweet and savory crepes with homemade ice cream. Off the coast of Praslin about 2km is Cousin Island. It has been purchased by the Bird Life International, for bird preservation. It is a must see when you are in the Seychelles. It is amazing to see the birds nesting on the graound and on every branch. We saw many white-tailed tropic birds in all stages of life. The island is also home to two of the oldest giant tortoise. After the 1 1/2 hour tour of the island you will have a nice BBQ with freshly caught fish. Leave a Comment

To get to the top of La Digue, "Eagle's Nest" and the "Pavillion" at 333 meters above the sea level, is a breeze, albeit a sweaty one. However, neither the tourist office nor guidebooks are good at explaining the route. From the populated western side of La Digue, near the top end of the bird preserve (road goes up slightly north of there) you proceed up the hillside called Belle Vue dotted with family houses along the paved road. The road curves to the left in its upper part, and comes to a shrine. Here the road splits and you can choose either, as the roads, soon becoming trails meet higher up, but say, take the paved road right. At the end of the road is a family house. Continue straight up past a shed and you will see the trail commencing, curving left, and then shortly to the right and up. Continue along this trail (it doesn't branch) for about 15-20 minutes uphill, and you should find yourself on the top ridge, a saddle, the spine of La Digue. Go to the left and look around from a beautiful clearing with interesting vegetation and views of Felicite and Marianne Islands. Turn around and proceed south on the saddle, and you will soon find yourself at the highest spot, with a peak marker. Here you have a wide view of the west coast of La Digue and the La Passe, Praslin, Mahe and islands south of La Digue. The jungle obscures the view of Anse Coco, Petit Anse and Grand Anse. From the ridge, trails branch off toward the north, east and south-west of the island. If you left your bike at Belle Vue, it's probably best to return down via the saddle where you came from. Without a bike, a traverse of the island would be a good idea. Leave a Comment Other Contact: Tourist office, La Passe

Snorkeling trips can be arrange on Praslin, which will take you out to the islet of St Pierre. This is in the Curieus National Marine Park. We stopped here on our way out to Curieus Island. We snorkeled and fed the fish. The water was clear and there were a lot of pretty fish. The coral wasn't in great shape though. Leave a Comment

The only way to get her is by boat. It is a laid back place with friendly people and beautiful beaches. Take your time looking around the Veuve Nature Reserve and see if you can find the Seychelles Black Paradise Flycatcher. Leave a Comment

There are plenty of trails on the Seychelles islands, but to find them is a challenge. The hand-out tourist maps are inaccurate when it comes to trails and foot paths. Better get the topo maps of the Geographical Survey (see my shopping tip on this), they have accurate maps that show fairly well the trails, too. Normally the trails go to some view point or traverses a ridge or end up at some nature phenomenon, water fall, shrine or plantation. The walks are hot, so bring water. A delightful way of spending a day out as an alternative to the beach. Leave a Comment

If you really want to get into isolation: fly to Desroches, Bird Island, Dennis Island or some other distant island in the Seychelles group. There are resorts with only a few beach houses on isolated islands. We didn't do it though as the Seychelles themselves are definetly off the beaten path. I still recall having first arrived on Praslin and sensing the same African feeling that I had sensed in Kenya and Zanzibar. Praslin is really a Jurassic Park type of an island....very uncrowded. La Digue has more tourists but even Anse Source D'Argent is empty when compared to other tourist destinations. Mahe, contrary to common misbelief, is very much off the beaten path. You can rent a car and choose from dozens of empty beaches around the island just like on Praslin. Mahe's jungle covered mountains and especially the mist jungle atop the 1000 meter Congo Rouge mountain range (almost always covered by clouds) are very much off the beaten path. I won't reveal the name of this one beach we walked to from our hotel through some lower mountain valleys on Mahe. We ended up in a blue lagoon...a deserted one...on the way there way had to, for example, go through a little cave as the path lead through it. This secret little beach is feared by locals as a voodoo priest of some type used to live there. Well, we saw no voodoo priest nor anyone else...voodoo is basically just local folklore used for scaring kids from roaming and getting lost on the mountains. Anyways, we had a paradise beach with a turqoise lagoon protected on both sides by lush jungle covered hills just for the two of us. Leave a Comment
