rainforest hiking with children

by helenaxel

Just returned from a wonderful 2 weeks on Mahe Island. One of the highlights of the tour was a guided rainforest walk with local expert BASIL BEAUDOIN (tel. 241790/514972). Would recommend everyone to invest in one morning or whole day tour in his company, particularly if you have children with you. As all parents know, children do not like walking - however, with BASIL BEAUDOIN, the whole outing was an exciting, informative adventure and our three children aged 7, 10 and 13 enjoyed the whole morning (4 hours ) and climbed to the top of the Kopolia peak where we experienced the breath-taking views over Victoria and the Ste Anne Marine National Park, and back again without a murmur of complaint. He was attentive, friendly and highly knowledgable, stopping every few metres to explain every plant, tree, insect, frog, hidden bird´s nests, spider´s web and lizard. He was very entertaining...

Curieuse Island

by cricketdog

Hiking on Curieuse Island is quite an experience. On one side, you have the Doctor's House where Doctor MacGregor treated his leprosy patients and on the other side, you'll visit the tortoise preserve. The hike is relatively easy although the trail is a little rough in areas. I was able to hike it in flip-flops without too much of a problem. During the hike, you'll walk through a mangrove forest and get to see some pretty spectacular views of the ocean. The beach near the doctor's house is beautiful. In fact, I thought it was one of the nicest beaches in all of the Seychelles although unless you're there with a group to BBQ, the facilities are very limited. There are no stores on the island.

Fabulous and Beautiful Bird Island

by cricketdog

If you're looking for a place of quiet solitude with some of the most amazing, unspoiled beaches, Bird Island is the place! Bird is one of the most beautiful islands from a pure "relax and enjoy" perspective. There isn't much to do other than kick back, explore, and read a good book!

Wonderful Nature Reserve - Cousin Island

by cricketdog

I highly recommend you take the time to go over to Cousin Island for a tour of the nature preserve there. Landing on the island is a blast in itself. Boats are literally launched up on the sand at full-speed from the water. The captain picks up the motor just in time for you to arrive on the island and jump out of the boat without getting your feet wet! There are birds all over the place (Fairy Terns, Magpie Robins, and Tropic Birds) and they aren't afraid of humans in the least bit. We also saw a lot of skinks, lizards and hermit crabs. The tour guides are very friendly and live on the island to study the birds. The tour was very informative and a great way to see the natural habitat of the Seychelles.

The waterfall at Morne Seychellois National Park

by dickiebird

We searched high and low for this spectacular waterfall, even going on a 4 hour hike into the mountains - finally finding it under our nose just close to Port Launay beach. It is signposted well and is about 1km off the main road. There is a nominal charge but it is well worth it. You will also be treated with a close up view of a fruit bat that is captive, but not locked up. What a cute, little guy.The pool under the waterfall is deep, but a bit rocky in patches. Do not dive in .... rather slide in and use your feet to discover the deep and shallow parts. But do swim, it is cool and fresh, a perfect end to a beach day!

Hermit Crabs changing shells

by roxane&jose

If you find a hermit crab, make a virtuall beach in a bucket and throw in some empty shells slightly bigger than the one the crab is living in...chances are he will swap his shell for a bigger model. We saw this happen 4 times.

Birdwatching

by iwys

The Seychelles is a birdwatcher's paradise, with its exotic mix of endemic species, African land birds and the seabirds of the Indian Ocean. You will see Cattle Egrets so tame that they are standing on the fiish stalls in the main market of Victoria and ground doves that will jump onto your restaurant table. As you sail between the islands you will see huge flocks of graceful, Fairy Terns and Sooty Terns, as well as the occasional White-tailed Tropicbird. On land you can see endemic species only found in the Seychelles, such as the Seychelles Bulbul and Seychelles Sunbird. So, make sure you pack a pair of binoculars and enjoy the wonderful birds of the Seychelles. Oh, and yes, I did use a zoom lens to take this picture. The birds are not that tame!Click on the link below for a beautiful, true story about a Fairy Tern:

Anse Cocos

by marcic

Another walk over another hill this time from Petit Anse :)This one was even nicier than Petit Anse but it takes some time, inspiration and guts to get there. We've met this nice french couple on La Digue and early (not as early as I would like to) in the morning went there. If you can wake up early enough sunrise should be excellent over those granite boulders

Petit Anse

by marcic

It's a must! Take trail from Grand Anse over the hill (be prepared for sweating) and you'll reach Petit Anse which is another nice place to visit on La Digue. Marvelous view from the top of the hill on Grand Anse and another small beach - a must see next time we'll go there.

Coco de Mar

by carnsoreboxer

Not quite off the beaten path but you do have to travel to outlying islands and stay overnight to visit this rain forest with the coco de mar nut! Got to be seen to be believed make sure you ask which is the female and the male!
