Seychelles Off The Beaten Path

  • rainforest hiking with children

Just returned from a wonderful 2 weeks on Mahe Island. One of the highlights of the tour was a guided rainforest walk with local expert BASIL BEAUDOIN (tel. 241790/514972). Would recommend everyone to invest in one morning or whole day tour in his company, particularly if you have children with you. As all parents know, children do not like walking...

  • Curieuse Island

Hiking on Curieuse Island is quite an experience. On one side, you have the Doctor's House where Doctor MacGregor treated his leprosy patients and on the other side, you'll visit the tortoise preserve. The hike is relatively easy although the trail is a little rough in areas. I was able to hike it in flip-flops without too much of a problem. During...

  • Fabulous and Beautiful Bird Island

If you're looking for a place of quiet solitude with some of the most amazing, unspoiled beaches, Bird Island is the place! Bird is one of the most beautiful islands from a pure "relax and enjoy" perspective. There isn't much to do other than kick back, explore, and read a good book!

  • Wonderful Nature Reserve - Cousin Island

I highly recommend you take the time to go over to Cousin Island for a tour of the nature preserve there. Landing on the island is a blast in itself. Boats are literally launched up on the sand at full-speed from the water. The captain picks up the motor just in time for you to arrive on the island and jump out of the boat without getting your feet...

  • The waterfall at Morne Seychellois...

We searched high and low for this spectacular waterfall, even going on a 4 hour hike into the mountains - finally finding it under our nose just close to Port Launay beach. It is signposted well and is about 1km off the main road. There is a nominal charge but it is well worth it. You will also be treated with a close up view of a fruit bat that is...

If you find a hermit crab, make a virtuall beach in a bucket and throw in some empty shells slightly bigger than the one the crab is living in...chances are he will swap his shell for a bigger model. We saw this happen 4 times.

The Seychelles is a birdwatcher's paradise, with its exotic mix of endemic species, African land birds and the seabirds of the Indian Ocean. You will see Cattle Egrets so tame that they are standing on the fiish stalls in the main market of Victoria and ground doves that will jump onto your restaurant table. As you sail between the islands you will...

Another walk over another hill this time from Petit Anse :)This one was even nicier than Petit Anse but it takes some time, inspiration and guts to get there. We've met this nice french couple on La Digue and early (not as early as I would like to) in the morning went there. If you can wake up early enough sunrise should be excellent over those...

It's a must! Take trail from Grand Anse over the hill (be prepared for sweating) and you'll reach Petit Anse which is another nice place to visit on La Digue. Marvelous view from the top of the hill on Grand Anse and another small beach - a must see next time we'll go there.

  • Sauzier waterfall

Back in 1998 with a local guy we used to wander around showed us many places many places no tourists would go to. Even nowadays the first thing that comes to mind about Seychelles is the waterfall. You cannot lose such memories ever. Moonlight... Sounds from the water falling... Love...Now in 2003 - five years later - people have found this place...

If you explore the islands - either by bus, walking, driving a car or with a bike - you'll find places where you get the impression, you are the only one on this island. Especially on Mahe we found so many nice beaches which "belonged" totally to us! Great! And the nature of Seychelles is indiscibable anyway! Go and breathe it into your body and...

Silhouette Island is the third largest granitic island of the Seychelles, situated 19 miles North West of Mahe(15 mn by helicopter). Silhouette's forest remains one of the least interfered with natural habitats in the region, and provides an ideal escape for nature lovers. The pictures shows the island in the background from mahe.

  • Trekking the Seychelles

There are plenty of trails on the Seychelles islands, but to find them is a challenge. The hand-out tourist maps are inaccurate when it comes to trails and foot paths. Better get the topo maps of the Geographical Survey (see my shopping tip on this), they have accurate maps that show fairly well the trails, too. Normally the trails go to some view...

To get to the top of La Digue, "Eagle's Nest" and the "Pavillion" at 333 meters above the sea level, is a breeze, albeit a sweaty one. However, neither the tourist office nor guidebooks are good at explaining the route. From the populated western side of La Digue, near the top end of the bird preserve (road goes up slightly north of there) you...

If you really want to get into isolation: fly to Desroches, Bird Island, Dennis Island or some other distant island in the Seychelles group. There are resorts with only a few beach houses on isolated islands. We didn't do it though as the Seychelles themselves are definetly off the beaten path. I still recall having first arrived on Praslin and...

Hire a car. You can drive around the whole of Mahe in one day. Take time out to stop at one of the Tea Plantations for a cuppa and a fantastic view as the plantations are at the top of the island. The roads are winding but there's no heavy traffic to contend with so it's worth taking to the open road. This way you can see everything there is to see...
