If you really want to get into...

If you really want to get into isolation: fly to Desroches, Bird Island, Dennis Island or some other distant island in the Seychelles group. There are resorts with only a few beach houses on isolated islands. We didn't do it though as the Seychelles themselves are definetly off the beaten path. I still recall having first arrived on Praslin and sensing the same African feeling that I had sensed in Kenya and Zanzibar. Praslin is really a Jurassic Park type of an island....very uncrowded. La Digue has more tourists but even Anse Source D'Argent is empty when compared to other tourist destinations. Mahe, contrary to common misbelief, is very much off the beaten path. You can rent a car and choose from dozens of empty beaches around the island just like on Praslin. Mahe's jungle covered mountains and especially the mist jungle atop the 1000 meter Congo Rouge mountain range (almost always...

Take a trip to the Nature Protection Trust of Seychelles headquarters on Silhouette Island. It's run by Ron and Gill Gerlach, who are very friendly and will be happy to show you around! Meet the lovely giant tortoises! Ask Ron to take you up Mont Pot-a-Eau to see Jardin Marron, an area which the Trust is restoring to its natural state - it's an amazing walk, and he'll show you all the flora and fauna on the way! We saw a chameleon, some geckos, and some beautiful white-tailed tropic birds!Ron also makes gorgeous batiks, which he sells at the shops on Silhouette and at Beau Vallon on Mahe.

Hiking The National Park

by shellseeker

Hiking in the Morne Mount Seychellois National Park on Mahé Island. The 699 m high Trois Frères Peak offers you a magnificent view over the harbour of Victoria, St. Anne Marine National Park and of the islands in the distance, La Digue and Praslin in the distance. The steep hike starts at Sans Souci Forset Station. The trail is signposted.

Hire a car. You can drive around the whole of Mahe in one day. Take time out to stop at one of the Tea Plantations for a cuppa and a fantastic view as the plantations are at the top of the island. The roads are winding but there's no heavy traffic to contend with so it's worth taking to the open road. This way you can see everything there is to see in your own time.

Fairyland

On the east coast of Mahe, close to Anse Royale, this is a beautiful beach with crystal blue water and the picturesque Souris island. Great for snorkelling too!

Cerf Island

One of the smaller coral islands off the coast, this is a great place for a day trip. These are commercially available, and the coral as well as fish life is excellent here.

This is a beautiful sheltered bay with nice beaches and very good for snorkeling. You can walk here if you stay nearby in Port Glaud, like we did.

Aride

A lot of frigate-bird, stormy-petrel and albatross live in Aride island, so the noise is so great that is deafening. Pay attention: the visit is open only three days a week!
