Insect megafauna

by Saagar

If you think you've seen everything, wait until you see the millipeds of the Seychelles: the insect life on the Seychelles comes as a surprise. Some types of insects here are absolutely gargantuan - beetles, millipeds and centipedes. They will all recoil at the sight of you - and vise versa? - and withdraw. So they are not dangerous. If you corner them and try to pick up centipedes and millipedes, however, they will give you a bit of a bite, so they should best be left in peace. In forests, underneath fallen leaves, seems to be the hunting grounds of these interesting big little critters. Unfortunately, you most often see them crushed by vehicles after they've made a daring attempt at crossing the road...I found millipeds on La Digue that measured 10 inches....

Valle de mai

by kyoub

A primeval rainforest, one of the best reasons to see Praslin. The Valle de Mai is steamy, exotic, and full of atmosphere.Giant specimens of our everyday houseplants, a posssible glimps of the rare black parrot that lives here, and a place to observe the Coco de Mer trees.Could this be the Garden of Eden?Catkin of the unique male coco de mer has inspired many legends and the theory that it was.

Schooner to La Digue from Praslin

by Catmagic

I highly reccomend taking a day trip at least to La Digue.La Digue is an unspoiled island with only 2 or 3 vehicles on the island and about a thousand people.Absolutely beautiful beachs. You get around by renting a bicycle. You can get here by taking the cat boat to Praslin and then a schooner to La Digue. The Schooner trip was great and we even saw a whale shark on the way.

Curieuse Island

by kyoub

Ever since the leper colony was closed, the island has become a breeding center for the giant Seychelle tortoises.Visitors can walk around the pens that house the young tortoises, that rang from tiny hatchlings to five year old giants..

Popular beach

by kyoub

The most popular beach on Mahe. A great place for watersports. The clear warm water at Beau Vallon make swimming a real pleasue. It is safe for children, no big waves, no strong currents, and soft sand underfoot.

Aride Island

by kyoub

Aride is a special nature reserve. It has a large amount of seabirds, colonies of lesser noddy, roseate terns, and frigatebirds. We also saw white tailed baby Tropicbirds. It is a great place to spend the day.Tour the island, have lunch, and then go for a swim. before returning to Praslin.

Cousin Island

by kyoub

This little offshore island is home to several endangered species, it is a breeding site for seabirds and turtles. A special reserve for Birdlife Seychelles. We got to meet George, the 150 year old turtle that likes his neck stroked. We were also lucky enough to see a Hawksbill turtle coming ashore to lay her eggs.

Swim!!! The beaches are incredible...this pic is taken from the balcony of our hotel Le Petit Village at Bel Ombre, on Mahe Island. If you like warm, clear water, and soft sand, then you will love the Seychelles. There are so many beaches to discover, and their natural beauty is really beyond description. I would highly recommend to stay on several different islands. Don't skip Mahe, as it has its own special beauty. I would also recommed to not miss, by any means, the islands of Praslin and La Digue. They are easy to get to by ferry from Mahe.

Eurasian winter bird life

by Saagar

During the northern winter months several species of waders and other birds have found their way to the Seychelles. Deliberately? Really, how did they find these specks of stone in the middle of the Indian Ocean???They are almost tame compared to the shyness they exhibit during the northern breeding season - it's possible to get quite close to several of the species, including the unlikely-looking long-beaked and -legged plovers. They are not the colorful versions of the summer plumages, but rather on the grey and drab side. For identification there are bird books available in the Seychelles - in Victoria book shops and souvenir shops elsewhere.Bring your binoculars and add another dimension to your beach stay!

Snorkelling outside the reef on La Digue

by Saagar

Outside the reef is where you will have the most fantastic views of marine life. By boat and organised trip this is easy, from the beach it is a bit dangerous. The waves need to be down, so there is no danger of being slammed by waves on corals. I identified three places on La Digues where this could be done: Off Anse Patate just below Patatran Hotel, Off Anse l'Union near the little island where a channel has been cleared for boats to the wharf, and Anse Severe, where the reef is relatively benign and you can jump or slide into some deeper parts off the reef. It all depends on the waves...
