Do not touch anything in the sea!

by Mara_2

The Seychelles are truly blessed islands since there are no mortally dangerous animals!Anyway, there are certain shells called Geographicus that expell poisenous darts and they can really make very unpleasent your holiday!Underwater is reccomended NEVER to touch anything! And do not forget that you should NOT WALK upon the coral barrier!

Roads and animals

by bojan74

Especially for people that are not used to drive on left side must be careful how to drive. I had problems at beginning because I was not common to change gears with left hand and also problems with indicators. But more dangerous is that roads are usually just cut off on both sides (sometimes only a few sometimes even for 2 meters), so if you drive too much on left side, you can easily fall off the road. This happened also to me just about 20 minutes later when I got car at airport. I was driving too much on left side and just for a while I looked at map and suddenly fell down off the road so left wheels were about half meter down and right wheels were still on road. Thanks god people there are very kind and nice. After a few minutes (seconds) when I was looking around what to do about 7 men come around without I am asking them anything and lift my car on put it on road again!!! I was...

General warnings

by craigaio

Just got back from the Seychelles (November 2006) Here are a few useful tips:1) SPIDERS - Seychelles is not a good place for arachnophobes...palm spiders are everywhere...on bushes especially! they are harmless and stay in their webs! Also they avoid humans...so you don't usually come across them on paths, even through woods they tend to make their webs well away from the path. I don't like spiders but they didn't bother me...they did bother my mum though!!!2) SHARP CORAL -Take sandals for the sea! In some areas especially it is easy to cut your foot on the coral which is very sharp. Not all beaches have this problem, mainly the ones with a reef.3) WATER - When going on walks, take plenty of water! The climate here is very humid and you sweat buckets!4) MOSQUITOS - BEWARE the excursion to cousin island where you will be taken on a walk around the reserve...take lots of mosquito...

Sting-Ray's, Sharks, Tarantulas, Rats

by roxane&jose

There are sting ray's in Baie Ste Anne (The main Bay). This is the only place we saw them, but we saw about four every day. The Sting Ray's are not particularly aggressive but stay away from them anyway because if they feel cornered they may attack. We know of atleast one injury where some *** tried to kill a stingray with a knife and ended up being rushed to the hospital, paralysed for 2 days. We killed two enormous tarantulas in our room one day. We emptied a can of repellant on them, to no effect. Eventually we had to swat them with the fly swatter. We didn't see any live rats, but we came accross some humongous road kill. See in the photo it's size compared to my hand...and check out his teeth! We also saw a smallish shark fin one day in the bay hanging around some seaweed.

by mandy66

Watch out for sea urchins - they are everywhere in the waters of the Seychelles and apparently VERY painful if stood upon !!!! so watch where you put your feet - especiall ynear or on rocks or if you stand on the ocean floor without looking !! - wear some sort of footwear where swimming if possible.

HOW YOU CAN HELP THE ANIMALS

by mandy66

If you do witness animal cruelty on your visit to the Seychelles or just feel strongly about the way the country chooses to ignore it's animal cruelty issues and the impact that this has on their tourism industry please write to one of the addresses below expressing your concerns:joric@seychelles.net or Stranel@yahoo.com these people are able to forward your comments to Government and Tourist Associations on the islands - this is the only way to evoke change by sticking together to be heard !PLEASE HELP by doing this as your letters WILL HELP enormously. Also the address of the SSPCA in the Seychelles is :Seychelles Society For THe Prevention Of Cruelty To AnimalsP.O. Box 596VICTORIAMAHESEYCHELLES

AVOID SEYCHELLES IF YOU ARE AN ANIMAL LOVER

by mandy66

Undoubtedly this is a beautiful place to visit - but it does not earn the description "Paradise" for me !!- unless Paradise is filled with abused/unwanted and un-cared for dogs and cats left to breed till they are out of control population wise and therefore end up starving , being tortured cruel locals and/or left to run about the roads to get run over and injured/killed by passing vehicles !!!! we viisited the islands a couple of weeks ago and were horrified that the Government in the Seychelles does nothing to help these poor unfortunate creatures !!!!there are a small band of wonderful supporters of the Seychelles Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals on the islands who are trying desperately to instigate changes and offer free neutering for dogs and cats.We witnessed so much animal suffering in these islands that it has spoilt our holiday memories and until I hear that...

Avoid the local currency!!

by Poppso

Everyone I was here with had problems with the local currency. This was in the summer of 2003. The problem was if you were obviously not from Seychelles than you were required at most businesses (Everywhere I went) to use your currency from your home country. But then they would give you change in the local currency which you couldnt spend. The only place I found that I could spend the local currency was at one of the Casinos but then you could only will the local currency and what are you going to do with that? You could buy drinks.. that was it.

Insects?

by Saagar

There are very few insects that will cause you any pain or harm in the Seychelles. In this respect it is a blessed country. There are mosquitos, but nowhere near the masses you will find in most humid equatorial countries. And they do not carry any diseases such as malaria, dengue or yellow fever. Same goes for sandflies that live among seaweed washed ashore on sandy beaches. Easy to avoid by moving away from infested ppatches of beach. What you need is a mosquito repellent, and see to it that your hotel room has an insect mesh in the window openings or a mosquito net over the bed.

The weather in the Seychelles - danger????

by Saagar

Several persons have asked me about the weather and when to go to the Seychelles...I was there two weeks in February 2004. Previously I have visited mid-December. Both times have been at the edges of the socalled rainy season, with no ill effects. In February 04 I had maybe two half days or a bit more overcast out of the two weeks, but that only gave a chance to recover from intense sunshine. Some clouds passed overhead and a couple of short-lived rainshowers, too, but nothing monsoon-like in these parts. Mahe, however, is big and high enough to have its own fog and clouds and rainshowers, so you may have some localised clouds and rain. If on the eastern side of the island, cross over to the western side and you may well see the sun again. You can always travel to the Seychelles anytime and feel the warmth and have sunshine for the most part, regardless season.
