Currents on reefs

by Saagar

With all the waves crashing in over the reefs, be it low or high tide, the water has somehow to flow out of the basin again. So it does through slightly deeper channels ("Passe") here and there on the reefs. Our experience was that these were well marked by warning signs: "Dangerous swimming", "Swimming prohibited" etc. on land. However, several tourists seemed not to understand this danger: the force of the current in addition to the ocean breakers' backwash may drag even superb swimmers into the deep outside the reef. It could be hard to reenter the lagoon without being lacerated by coral outcrops.

Don't laugh: falling coconuts!

by Saagar

In a place where the midday sun is right above you will naturally seek shadow, yes? Don't try this at the Seychelles without a second look up in the treetops: coconuts? I did the mistake on a previous trip to La Digue, skipped off my towel for a cooling swim, returned to land only to find a newly fallen coconut cratering the towel where my head had rested 5 minutes earlier... On this trip our rented vehicle was re-parked at Port Launay Marine National Park near La Plaine because of overhanging coconuts, and sure enough, a minute after we had changed parking spot the first nut smashed to the ground with a resounding "thump!". Right where we had first parked. Watch it!

Spiders

by Russ60

As I mentioned before about the spiders they are quiet common apparantly living in the palm trees so just be careful when seeking shade on the beach.Another place where we saw a lot of spiders was on La Digue they made their webs in between the power/telephone lines strung between telegraph poles.Dont let this put you off too much they are not poisonous just BIG!!

Watch out for the locals!!!!

by Russ60

The locals being the insects which own these tropical islands.I came across them as I was about to take a scenic beach photograph through some palm trees. As I got into position to take a photo my wife screamed, I found I had stepped into what I can describe as numerous webs. To this day I have not seen spiders as big theywere almost as big as a womans hand.

Seychelles Tips

A few tips: Don't poke moray eels. As soon as you see the bus is bearing down on your car, pull over to your left; if you're walking, hop off the road. Bring sunscreen. More than you think you need. Bring a long-sleeved shirt to use when snorkeling; you'll want to cover your arms and back now and then. Stock up on and drink lots of water. It's humid and hot, and if you're arriving from a cooler dryer climate you'll dry out in a day.

Take everything (toiletries etc) with you because it's VERY expensive! Also, alcohol is extremely expensive, so don't expect a boozy holiday unless you have cash to splash or are on an all-inclusive trip!

Seychelles is a relatively safe place to travel, but if you're going walking in the mountains make sure you have a guide, or follow well-trodden paths: there may be hidden crevices! Also, it gets dark VERY suddenly between 6 and 6.30, so always aim to be back for about 5/5.30 to allow for delays...

by anniehon

The only dangers I can recall were the fact that the roads are narrow and winding and you never know when you might turn the corner and see a cow in the middle of the road...or a very large bus ( they all travel in the centre of the road) :)

by qillahboy

There are NO NATURAL DANGERS in Seychelles.Just a warning for the tourists: the exchange of money in local value (rupee) can be done solely and exclusively in banks and authorized exchange operators. Moreover, a tax of 40 USD is to be paid before leaving Seychelles.

I don't know how it is these days, but when I was visiting in the late 80's, you could feel the difference from Mauritius; mostly because the government was installed with the help of mercenaries. I knew the former PM Sir James Mancham and had a bit of insight on the then-current regime. You certainly felt a different atmosphere if you're working there, but if on vacation, it probably wouldn't come up at all.
