Khan el Khalili Market (Cairo)
  • Tip Rating:
  • The biggest and most famous market of Cairo was built in 1382. It covers a huge area in the center of the city, where you can find a wide variety of articles, from plastic stuff to embridery, from cafes to mosques.

Besides its commercial activity, the market (think of it more as a quarter than as a Mall) has always been a gathering point, a center for the social life in Cairo. Not long ago, you could meet Nobel Prize writer Naguib Mahfouz chatting and enjoying his narguile in the El-Fishawi Cafe, or Cafe of Mirrors.

If you wanna take a virtual tour around, go to the Virtual Khan el Khalili page... and don't forget to bargain! :-)

Victoria & Albert Wall (Cape Town, South Africa)
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is one of the few "normal western Malls" I have ever found in Africa. Is not very different from what you can find in any american or european city, but is not what one expects to find in an African country.
There are many interesting shops, and wonderful restaurants with nice terraces to have lunch by the sea, looking at the fishes going up and down.

    Babouge
  • Tip Rating:
  • Babouge is the typical Moroccan slippers
It is the most wanted souvenir to be bought by a tourist when they are in Morocco!
They are comfortable and you can deliver it and wait until the shoemaker will do it before your eyes some times, which gives you a special taste *LOL not of the slipper but of the process*

Art of nature: The best shopping is the one for free!
  • Tip Rating:
  • I don't wanna sound so romantic, but nothing truly is better than gathering some of the great seashells on African coasts, they are much bigger then ordinary ones you can found in Europe, with magical colors!
I had some great ones and gave as a gift to my close people!
Adding to normal souvenirs, this is the art of nature!

It's for free, no one is more generous than the nature!

    Souvenirs for the home front.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Almost every African country has got souvenir stalls along the road.
There you can buy work of art, masks, statues,…. and when you’re lucky you can see them do the carving.
Always negotiate about the prices, even if they look ridiculous low.
Back home again all these pieces of art will keep the memories alive.

    Don’t buy dirty(animals/insects) souvenirs.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Crocodile boots, a leopard purse or an ivory statue.
They might look beautiful and unique, but they aren’t worth it.
Each time you buy such an item, an animal must die for it.
SO USE YOUR MIND, if you’re looking for some accurate info on this issue, check CITES.

    CITES.
(the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an international agreement between Governments. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival.

  • If you want to take a bit of Africa home with you, take a large suitcase and leave some room in it. In every country in Africa you will come across Tribal Dancing Masks. These are used by many cultures and tribes in ceremonies celebrating all sorts of events. Real masks can be worn over the head and/or face, have eye holes and a place for leather straps to go to keep the mask on. If you are being offered a mask without these features – they are not real. Please note: Mask may not necessarily be from the country you are visiting and the sellers sometimes do not know the origin of the masks they sell.

Be prepared to argue and really haggle the price down. You will often be asked for up to 10 times what they will actually take!

Make sure you have room in your suitcase, they can be very big (Please see the pictures). Yes, that is me.
