Victoria Park located in downtown Freetown will give any traveler a chance to see what local crafts and things there are to buy in Sierra Leone.
What to buy: I've purchased wooden masks and carvings done by local artists. I've also picked up African clothes done in Gara tie-dye and the locally woven "country cloth". A batik cloth painting or dress is also a good choice.
What to pay: Prices vary there is the Porto Price (white man price) and the local price. I always go with a local to get the best price

There are different types of market in the country, but keep in mind if you need to buy something you'll have to go to--yes, a market!
"Tourists" usually visit Victoria Park in Freetown. There's a huge market full of cloth (gara and other types), dresses, wood carvings of all types, mats, and anything that can be called a souvenir. If you are a "white man" bring a national with you. As soon as we white people walk in, prices soar! So, nationals can get good prices, usually at about half of what they told you it first cost. But remember they're trying to make money for their families to eat. So, don't go too low, just know when you're being "ripped-off"...
What to buy: For Food Markets...see my page on Mattru...I will work on that soon.
What to pay: Currently the Leone (currency) :
5000 L = (roughly) $2 USD
That's what it was when we were there. Most things--small things anyway cost no more than 20,000 L, but this again varies on what you buy and who you buy it from. 5,000 L is a pretty large amount of money for things when you're away from Freetown, but there isn't so much selection or variety.
