Hope Direct: Buy someone a future and hope with a goat

by Ekahau

This is really a charity organization one of many this one is from the UK and works only in Sierra Leone. Buy someones a future and a little hope every year at Christmas I buy some famileys in Sierra Leone Goats having lived here I find it is a great way to really give a family some hope and a future. The goats give quite a bit of milk plus they have more goats but can be consumed or sold. 25 Pounds

Victoria Park and environs: Sierra Leonean Handicrafts

by Lariumboy

Victoria Park located in downtown Freetown will give any traveler a chance to see what local crafts and things there are to buy in Sierra Leone. I've purchased wooden masks and carvings done by local artists. I've also picked up African clothes done in Gara tie-dye and the locally woven "country cloth". A batik cloth painting or dress is also a good choice. Prices vary there is the Porto Price (white man price) and the local price. I always go with a local to get the best price

There's a huge market full of cloth (gara and other types), dresses, wood carvings of all types, mats, and anything that can be called a souvenir. If you are a "white man" bring a national with you. As soon as we white people walk in, prices soar! So, nationals can get good prices, usually at about half of what they told you it first cost. But remember they're trying to make money for their families to eat. So, don't go too low, just know when you're being "ripped-off"... For Food Markets...see my page on Mattru...I will work on that soon. Currently the Leone (currency) :5000 L = (roughly) $2 USDThat's what it was when we were there. Most things--small things anyway cost no more than 20,000 L, but this...
