  • Hiring armed guards

by cyanover Written May 5, 2010

Many other sites will tell you that you need an armed militia to travel here. I can tell you this is not true and a waste of money. This rumor was believed to be started by local militia businesses to help increase sales. the truth is that within minutes of ariving, you probably will see armed locals with ak-47's surrounding you and will continue to surround you for free. It is best to travel Mogadisu when you have lost all will to live or a college student thinking about shooting up your college

  • We Survived Mogadishu for Three Days and Nights

by beckacj Updated Oct 21, 2009

This is clearly not a place to visit at current times. We (two of us) planned months and studied the city and people and gangs operating there, until we understood. We got in and out, taking hundreds of pictures, capturing several crimes on video. We also captured video and photos of friendly but terrified people who are trapped in that environment, not able to escape. We gave money to several women with children, helping them to carefully hide it. We were two white American women, in disguise, who got through and fooled every one. But it took a lot of research and planning. Anyway, don't visit Mogadishu right now. It's truly a fierce place that has lost its soul. It was a frightening and very sad place. I would have loved to have seen it many years ago when it was beautiful.

The Al Aruba Hotel after the civil war.

Be aware that there are only 2-3 hotel in the city where all the journalist stay. There were incidents where visitors were kidnapped while asleep in their hotel room.

Be very careful when selecting your hotel. Ask someone who has been there recently for hotel recommendation.

    Armed Guards at Daynile Airstrip

You must arrange armed guards for the duration of your stay, period! Without your armed guards' protection, you will be kidnapped in the matter of minutes.
