THIEVING BASTARDS - TAXIS IN HARGEISA

by DAO

Taxi drivers are the greatest thieves and worst sort of human on the planet. Many people stay at the Ambassador Hotel because they have a web-site and other perfectly good hotels do not (Please see my Hotel Tips on my Somalia Page). You can WALK to the Ambassador from the Airport. The guards inside the Airport secure area also own taxis. Parasites, every last one of them. They will tell you that the ‘Official’ rate is $10. Total lie and a rip-off! Pay no more than $1-2. The other Taxi drivers outside will do it. If not, start walking towards the gate. They will get the idea that you know how close the hotel is. For $5 (max) they will take you from the Airport to the far side of the city. For $10 they stay with you for 1 hour and drive you around.

Watch out for Con Artists

by Adam911

Keep an eye out for people like this. They see foreigners as easy money/suckers. Especially some 'officials', Taxi drivers, and off the street 'tour guides'. Just say no thank you. Or 'Ma Rabbo' meaning 'I don't want it' or just Maayo 'No'. The hotel your staying at can call a good taxi service for your or get a rental car for you. They can also recommend a good tour guide-if they dont provide one themselves.Tour Bus from Ambassador Hotel.

Night-time travels

by Omar64

Please don't travel at night. Doesn't matter if its the safest part of town. If you must, please hire a local guide to help you get where your going. If you travel at night, you make yourself easy prey, not only for criminals, but also for wildlife such as lion, wild dogs, etc. And another thing, try not to carry large sums of currency while travelling at night. If you want to see the wildlife at night, hire a guide with a land rover. That would be the safest form of travelling at night. I wouldn't recommend travelling at night in any part of the world, no matter how safe.
