The 50m tower is the highest in South Africa, It is ‘The Leaning Tower of Aberdeen’. The huge olive tree in the church garden originates from the Garden of Gethsemane. A collection of biblical wall hangings covers the walls of the church hall and guided tours are available during the day by appointment.

Situated at the intersection of N9 and R61 in the heart of the Mohair Route Views of the Camdeboo Mountains while enjoying tea, coffee, cool drinks or a light meal – pancakes, jaffles, pies and sausage rolls – all homemade stuff !! Then shop for mohair products, traditional biltong, droë wors (dry sausage) and venison, bottled jams, pickles, mustard, fruit, olives and honey and dried fruit and nuts. Take a stroll around the dam.

This may be of special interest to historians. Many of the soldiers, both British and Boer, who lost their lives during the Anglo Boer War are buried here. British graves are numbered and the cemetery is open to the public.
This is a great part of South African history

A few more of Aberdeen's highlights...

A lunchtime stop (and a long journey ahead of us) meant that we couldn't explore Aberdeen properly. We intend to return though.

Near the town is the Fonteinbos Nature Reserve, 1500 hectares of karoo vegetation with kudu and springbok. There are also dinosaur footprints in the sedimentary rock there.

There is also a municipal nature reserve, which is a little more tame apparently.

The Victorian Karoo architecture is just fabulous, and can be found just by wandering along the streets in the centre of town.

In the last ten years, Aberdeen has become well-known for a series of wall hangings made by local people from mohair. They were, I believe, originally in the church itself, but now reside in a hall on the north side of the church (on the other side of the 'roundabout'). Unfortunately when we were in town we couldn't find the curator, so never got to see them.
