How to get there
Directions from Port Elizabeth (PE):
Take the N2 highway towards Grahamstown. Take the turnoff to the left signposted “Motherwell” and “Addo Elephant National Park”. Turn left at the top of the off-ramp and proceed through Motherwell. Follow this road until you see the entrance to the park on the right. Distance PE to park - about 72 km
Gate opening and closing times:
The entrance gate is open from 07:00 to 19:00 but is staffed by a security guard between 19:00 and 07:00.

The park is situated 72 km from Port Elizabeth in the Sundays River Valley and Zuurberg Mountain range. The access road from the main road (4 km) is tarred as far as the restcamp. Roads within the restcamp are tarred – all other internal roads are gravel.
Gate Hours are from 07:00 to 19:00 throughout the year.

You need to have your own car here.
Walking is naturally prohibited in most areas of the park, and you wont get to see much sans a vehicle.
They do have tours (we did a guided night tour), but you really do need your own vehicle to get around and to view the animals properly.
There are many car hire companies in this area and their prices are competitive.
The photo shows the car we have travelled to the Kruger National Park in. It is ideal as it is a 4x4 and tackles loose gravel really well, and is higher up than a normal car, so viewing is better.
A normal car is fine though, just ensure you have air conditioning. We used a normal car for Addo and it was fine.

They know where the animals are, partially due to man-made watering holes. There are many forms of deer (springbok, kudu, etc.) that stand pressed against brush to be in the shade.
