This was the peak of the adventures here, not only the possibility to ride the quad bike all the way the Sanipass, but having the best guide you can dream of, Kevin Webster, a professional driver who lives many years in the region was as fantastic guide.
If not by own vehicle, there are also some tours around, one that I saw on my way is the Sani Pass tours which will take you all the way up to Sani Pass, but to be honest, I wouldn’t like to be in their vehicle at the time I took it over ;-)
The Central Berg is easily accessible by road. From Pretoria/ Johannesburg take the N3 (towards Durban). This is a double lane National Road, in very good condition. You will pass Heidelberg, Villiers, Harrismith and Van Reenens. After the Tugela Toll Plaza, take the N11/R616 turn off to Ladysmith/ Bergville then turn Right (R600) toward Winterton. At Winterton, cross the bridge and turn Right to cross the railway line- you are on your way to the Central Drakensberg (+/- 12km).
The roads in the area of the Berg can be narrow with sharp bends, so not speed; there is no need for that in any case. Most areas of interest can be reached with a normal saloon car-you don’t need a suv (4x4).
The best is of course to use your own car here, there is practically no real public transport here and own car gives you all the best option to explore and enjoy this beautiful part of the country.
