When Visiting JNB
  • Tip Rating:
  • In my personal opinion I would say it would be best to stay in Sandton when visiting JNB. This use to be my favourite place to live when visiting JNB. Well I guess I stay here now. My reason for saying so is that it is generally safer than most places in JNB although there is crime everywhere. There is great Hotels and Shopping Malls here. The Hotels cater for all tourist activity here.

The busy life , people is not very relaxed here. They always in rush to do something and go somewhere.

Make sure your insurance is paid up
  • Tip Rating:
  • Linksfield Park Clinic, Should you be unfortunate enough to get Ill in Johannesburg make sure you have the address of this Clinic in yer pocket....... Superbly equiped with all the mod con's and unbelievable service standards

Absolutely outstanding medical care, I don't care who say's what about South Africa, but let me say this to you....... It doesn't come any better anywhere in the world when it comes to medical facilities and quality caring and attentive physicians and nursing staff.... OH, just one thing though, A visit to this Clinic for a lung infection cost me 1000 U$D in all, so make sure you have sufficient medical cover when you come

    Johannesburg International Airport
  • Tip Rating:
  • Johannesburg Airport is one very busy airport indeed. Its always a mission to get parking for one and when you have booked tickets online its sometimes really crazy standing in queues that takes forever to move. When I look at the airport I think the domestic section is much nicer than the international section as the domestic section has a nice section where you got all your restaurants , couple of shops and banks and its on a level of its own so its not so busy looking like the international section. You still got to walk from the International Section to the Domestic Section , its not that far but trust me its always busy. If you picking up someone please make sure that they already waiting for you at the pickup point there as the metro police there can give you hell and they will fine you if your vehicle is parked there unattended. There is also alot of WIFI points so if you need to make use of it then you`ll clearly see the WIFI marked areas. As far as getting around in the airport , its should`nt be a problem as there is over head signs all over that is of great help. There is alot of taxi`s there and trust me its expensive to take. I would say rather arrange with your hotel to pick you up at the airport. Just check out this website www.acsa.co.za for more info regarding Johannesburg International Airport.

Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth are the 4 main areas of South Africa where 75% of all the country's ecoonomic activity occurs! Gauteng is the absolute powerhouse of the country, with about 40% of the GDP hailing from there. It's where most of the jobs are, and where people go to .make money'. Unfortunately though, with that, the criminals are well aware fo this and so it has the reputation as being a place ridden with crime. Yes, there is alot of crime, but in the many years I lived there, we were only burgled once. I know of one car hijacking too where I personally know the people involved, where the people were not hurt.

    check out the Voortrekker ...
  • Tip Rating:
  • check out the Voortrekker Monument, (at Pretoria) ... a huge granite block, designed to symbolise the indomitable spirit of the Voortrekkers ... the brave Boers, in the mid 19th century, pushed northward to the unknown (at that time)territory. The monument is surrounded by a wall depicting ox-wagons, representing the trek wagons which the Boers drew up in a circle to form as a defense.

    visit the administrative...
  • Tip Rating:
  • visit the administrative capital of South Africa! Although Pretoria is so close to Jo'burg, 56 km away, about ½ an hour drive, the 2 cities could not be more different! We were provided a city tour … apparently this city takes its role as the legislature, administration and judiciary very seriously. There are many fine statues, 33 museums, I think, and 4 universities.

    Johannesburg General Tips Tip (Untitled)
  • Tip Rating:
  • I have to relate a really funny story, which someone reminded me of the other day.... Living in Scotland, rain country of the world!, I have never been in an outside pool, you know, one belonging to a house. So it was a real novelty for me to swim outside in the beautiful sunshine. I forgot to take my swimsuit with me...so I figured I would just wear a pair of shorts and my strapless bra. My friend and I decided to dive in at the same time and so we both dived...she came up first and when I emerged, she burst out laughing. You can imagine what she was laughing at..when I had dived in, my bra top had fallen down and so there was me baring all for those around!!

Try and only carry the cash you will need with you for the day, or else have plastic handy. This is in the unlikely event that you lose money or it is 'lifted' from you! Travellers cheques are used widely throughout South Africa, as are credit cards.

    Good ole Joey's
  • Tip Rating:
  • Johannesburg, has been given a bad rap over the years. It used to be a thriving city (In the centre of the city), but many businesses, including The Stock Exchange, moved into Sandton, which is now a strong CBD (Central Business District) in its own right. Many businesses have de-centralised. Having said that, it is undergoing a transformation, residential flats/apartments are being refurbished and money is being put into this city for the people. Johannesburg city centre is not the ideal place for a traveller/tourist to go to. The city is generally dirty, has hawkers everywhere, and there’s not much in the way of family entertainment at all. But if you would like to experience some traditional street culture, this is where you will find it. Keep your car windows closed though when driving through it, especially at night. There is so much to see and enjoy and savour in the areas neighbouring the City Centre!
