    Gard at Gold Reef City

The place is a theme park built on the concept on mining. Not only is South Africa known for its gold and diamond mines…Johannesburg itself is located right on top of one gold ore and the park itself is built around and on top of No. 14 shaft of Crown Mines. But most people come here just for the ride and fun of course. We went with my brother and sister in-law, Karabo and Ame. After paying 80 Rand per person at the entrance we got access to the park and all the rides in the park. In the park we had great fun trying out the roller coasters Anaconda, Jozi Express, Golden Loop and Tower of Terror. The last one is not really a roller coaster but you get a 47 meter drop which is pretty mean :-) We had to wait for quite some time for this because they only had one car and only 8 people could go each time :-(

But the highlight for me in the park was the underground tour. We had to pay an extra 50 Rand per person for this but hey, it is not every day you get to go down in a real gold mine :-) This is no. 14 shaft of Crown Mines but it was actually the 13th shaft according to our guide but they skipped this number due to superstition. After getting a helmet and torch (with a big battery pack) we were lowered down to 220 meters below ground level and we got a short and hectic tour of the first level of this mine that stretched down to a staggering 3293 meters (about 10000 ft). The mine itself was shut down in 1977 and at the time they only produced 4 grams of gold per ton of rock that was mined. It is amazing to be able to get to go down in a real mine and get an impression of what the working conditions were like. We also went to see the gold pouring but due to bad luck the show had to be cancelled due to electrical problems. According to what I have read you get to see 12.5 kg of gold being poured and made into a gold bar. And they say you can take it home if you can pick it up with one hand on the first try…well, I was looking forward to bringing that gold home! :-)

A fun day out. Gold Reef City is a replica of Johannesburg as the mining town that it was around 1900. It has some cool rides for both kids and adults, and an underground tour of an old mine shaft where there is a gold pouring display. On some days there are traditional gumboot dancing displays.

It could be a wasted opportunity not to visit a working goldmine. The problem is that the mines themselves are not keen on having visitors there … so we visited the Gold Reef City. It is built around a famous gold mine, and it reconstructs the pioneering days of Jo'burg during the gold-rush era. We were told to wear helmets, by a guide and then he brought us down … 'thousands' of feet down to a shaft of the Crown Mines. We were shown round the looooong tunnels and the mine workers demonstrated how the gold was mined … which gave us a vivid impression of the work of the gold-miners. There was also a tribal dance performance but you got to fork out $ if you want a photo with them.
Isn't it interesting to be able to see what's undernealth the earth ... 'thousands' of feet downunder ... closer to the centre of the earth ...

A really fun place especially for those who love amusement parks! Hehehee. But Gold Reef City is a little different than any other amusement parks. This amusement park is located on a former gold mine area. There is an exhibition on the gold mine and you can even go way underground where they used to mine there!

'The many visitors to Gold Reef City see a combination of show, pleasure resort and a little “living theatre.” On the grounds of a former gold mine, houses and entire streets have been rebuilt true to the originals from the gold-rush times. Most of the employees of the resort are dressed in costumes of that era.

Interested visitors can take the nostalgic steam-train or a historical coach for a sightseeing tour through the extended premises. Those interested in gold mining can see the gold-containing ore veins in an old mine, or observe in a small museum how real gold is poured into barrels. '

Check out Johannesburg's famed tourist attraction - the Gold Reef City. You'd be brought down to the depths of the earth to see how these miners dig for gold. Get ready now to put on your crash helmet... and follow me.

Say, a good example is the pic below which shows a typical South African miner hard at work.... yeah, the cooooool one with the bandana. ;-) But seriously, we DID take the elevator which brought us down, down, down... hundreds of feet below for a first hand glimpse of life as a miner in a real diamond mine.
