It could be a wasted opportunity not to visit a working goldmine. The problem is that the mines themselves are not keen on having visitors there … so we visited the Gold Reef City. It is built around a famous gold mine, and it reconstructs the pioneering days of Jo'burg during the gold-rush era. We were told to wear helmets, by a guide and then he brought us down … 'thousands' of feet down to a shaft of the Crown Mines. We were shown round the looooong tunnels and the mine workers demonstrated how the gold was mined … which gave us a vivid impression of the work of the gold-miners. There was also a tribal dance performance but you got to fork out $ if you want a photo with them.
Isn't it interesting to be able to see what's undernealth the earth ... 'thousands' of feet downunder ... closer to the centre of the earth ...
A really fun place especially for those who love amusement parks! Hehehee. But Gold Reef City is a little different than any other amusement parks. This amusement park is located on a former gold mine area. There is an exhibition on the gold mine and you can even go way underground where they used to mine there!
'The many visitors to Gold Reef City see a combination of show, pleasure resort and a little “living theatre.” On the grounds of a former gold mine, houses and entire streets have been rebuilt true to the originals from the gold-rush times. Most of the employees of the resort are dressed in costumes of that era.
Interested visitors can take the nostalgic steam-train or a historical coach for a sightseeing tour through the extended premises. Those interested in gold mining can see the gold-containing ore veins in an old mine, or observe in a small museum how real gold is poured into barrels. '

Check out Johannesburg's famed tourist attraction - the Gold Reef City. You'd be brought down to the depths of the earth to see how these miners dig for gold. Get ready now to put on your crash helmet... and follow me.
Say, a good example is the pic below which shows a typical South African miner hard at work.... yeah, the cooooool one with the bandana. ;-) But seriously, we DID take the elevator which brought us down, down, down... hundreds of feet below for a first hand glimpse of life as a miner in a real diamond mine.
