“Represented by eight simple letters.
M for motherland
A for ages in the making
R for remembrance
O for origins
P for populations of the world
E for evolution
N for new beginnings
G for gaining knowledge
“Bringing all these letters together, you come up with the word Maropeng – a place in the world-famous Cradle of Humankind, where life began; a place where the journey of humankind begins; a place where history, present and future meet all at once.
“A place called Maropeng.”

Magaliesburg

The village of Magaliesburg lies just below the southern range of the Magaliesberg Mountains. The roads and rivers take similar paths, breaking though the steep ridges of the mountains in a few places, only to traverse much of the land along the valleys on either side of the two mountain ridges. This small village lies at the heart of a beautiful region of mountains, valleys, rivers and indigenous woodland - home to a variety of birds.
The Magaliesberg mountain range lies in between the highveld savannah of the Witwatersrand and the African bushveld, stretching roughly from past Rustenburg in the west, past Pretoria to Bronkhorstspruit in the east. This mountain range is almost 100 times older than Everest with interesting geology, archaeology, fauna and flora.

Paul Kruger Statue

Krugersdorp, the centre of the Mogale City region, is equidistant from both Johannesburg and Pretoria and a short drive away from the Magaliesberg mountains, with its wide range of luxury and budget accommodation.
This town, the industrial hub of Western Gauteng, with its mild climate, interesting topography and rich cultural and historical background, was founded in 1887 by MW Pretorius when gold was discovered on his farm Paardekraal. The mining industry has been an integral part of Krugersdorp ever since.
With a population of more than 350 000, Krugersdorp is the industrial hub of Western Gauteng and was founded in 1887 by MW Pretorius when gold was discovered on his farm, Paardekraal. The mining industry has formed an integral part in the development of the town, which has a rich cultural and historical background.
Krugersdorp was named after President Paul Kruger of Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek. It played an important part in South African history and came into being because of two important events in the history of South Africa: the Transvaal War of Independence (1881) and the discovery of the Witwatersrand Goldfields (1886).
The nearby 1 400 hectare game reserve in dense bushveld with plenty of game is one of the town's major tourist attractions. Also in close proximity are various national monuments and the Cradle of Humankind with the Sterkfontein Caves and the Wonder Cave.

Gold Reef City

Fancy an exploration underground? Gold Reef City is part of the over 100 km long gold reef that lays below the city of Johannesburg. Escorted tours explore the underground and one can attend demonstrations as to how gold is "made".
Above the underground Gold Reef City provides a casino and entertainment park that attracts a lot of visitors particulary on weekends.

Johannesburg

This is the largest city of South Africa and virutally created overnight when the gold boom started here at the end of the 19th century.
Today one can say it is the city of South Africa where the money is, the Stock Exchange of South Africa is at home here, as are most larger corporations including all banks.
Most of the foreign visitors will first arrive in Johannesburg, since the main international airport is also situated here.
Johannesburg is also the capital of South Africa's smallest - and richest - province, called Gauteng, a Sesotho name meaning "Place of Gold". Gauteng makes up just 1,4% of South Africa's land area, but it is home to more than a fifth of the population and produces a third of the country's wealth.
The city is the most densely populated and urbanised municipality in South Africa, home to 3 225 800 people in 1 006 900 households.

Pretoria - the Jacaranda City

Tshwane, the administrative capital and the birthplace of the new South African democracy, is home to a large diplomatic community. Well over a hundred embassies and foreign missions are located here.
The city covers an extensive municipal area (3 200 km2), stretching for almost 60 km east/west and 70 km north/south. The municipal area includes Pretoria, Centurion, Akasia, Soshanguve, Mabopane, Atteridgeville, Ga-Rankuwa, Winterveld, Hammanskraal, Temba, Pienaarsrivier, Crocodile River and Mamelodi. The area is inhabited by approximately 2,2 million people.
