Touring South Africa

by canuck68

I am not a South African but have been there as a visitor. I have been to the Kruger and to Pilanesberg game parks and loved them both. I have no idea how August is for game viewing. While in the area, you could spend a couple of days in the Drakensbergs (very beautiful) which are about a four hour drive from Johannesburg. Pilanesberg is two hours from Johannesburg. I highly recommend all of these spots and as the South Africans will tell you, self driving is probably the best way to go. The highways are good.I think Cape Town is lovely but I wouldn't spend too much time there as South Africa is a big country and there are a variety of things to see and do. My fondest memory of South Africa is the people and particularly those in the townships. When I am home I miss the beautiful weather, the scenery and the variety of activities that are possible in this great country.

Languages

by tini58de

There are 11 official languages in South Africa that are guaranteed official status in the Constitution of the country.English is generally understood, but you will usually find signs in 3 languages: English, Afrikaans and the prevalent third language of that region (which in the Cape region is Xhosa). If you are interested to read more, have a look at SAlanguages.com or Southafrica.info. It really is a fascinating subject!

The border post between Swasiland and South-Africa

by georeiser

The border post between Swasiland and South-Africa is well guarded and a bit time-consuming to pass. At Ngwenya border in Swasiland, all passengers have to get out of the minibuss and walk into the Swasiland immigration office to get a stamp in the passport for leaving the country. Then walk 100 meters over to the South-African border office to get an entry stamp in the passport. The South-African name of the place is Oshoek. You must fill an arrival card, a custom card and answer some questions from the officer, "how long you shall stay and where you shall go, etc". You can expect some queue, so be the first person out of the bus. Then wait 15-20 minutes for the minibus to pass the border. When you are waiting for the minibus make sure to go to the toalet. And you can also buy something to eat and drink in the kiosk.

Exchanging Money

by canuck68

I always felt that a safer place was the shopping mall. I always made sure I had at least one friend with me. There were often security people around. I heard but don't know for sure that the airport exchange places give a lower rate than the malls.

James Michener "The Covenant"

by MichaelFalk1969

In my opinion the best and most readable novel on South African history. It centers on the history of a few native and settler families in South Africa and includes the most interesting episodes of SA history like the Dutch East India Company, Huguenot settlers, Shaka Zulu, the Great Trek of the Boers, Cecil Rhodes, the Boer Wars, and the apartheid times. The book was published long before 1996, so apartheid still existed when the book was finished. It gives you quite an understanding on why South Africa was and is such a hard-fought-over country.(In Germany, the book title is "Verheißene Erde").

PE the place to be..

by sirsteve

SebastianSorry but I just can't agree with skipping PE.I'm a PE boy and I feel the need to defend my city :)Cape Town IS amazing (possibly the most beautiful city in the World), Plett is a great place to explore the Garden Route (Knysna, Plett, George, Mossel Bay). All are worth a visit but a bit far from PE or Cape Town for a day trip. Have a look at Storms River Cottages for a night as well. So perhaps 2 nights in Plett and 1 night at storms. Rustic but romantic and great for nature lovers. With regards to PE. We have some of the best beaches in the country especially if you actually enjoy swimming in the sea. (You might freeze your nads off in the CT water). You'll want to check out Sardinia Bay beach which is the best of the lot and not that well know to tourists. Go and sunset and you won't be dissapointed. Trust me!! We also have the best game reserve in the world, Shamwari, on our...

Visiting Townships.

by canuck68

I just returned from my second visit to South Africa. I wanted to see it a lot more carefully this time and not just go to the regular tourist spots. I did visit those spots also but wanted to deepen my South African experience this time.I visited several soup kitchens in different townships and was at once horrified by the awful living conditions and amazed at how happy all of the people were. Especially the kids. They were wonderful examples of accepting and being happy with what they had. An example of this is the lady (shown in the picture) who was delighted to show me the new stove she had been given in order to make the soup. She lived in very poor conditions but that stove was her prized possession. A church group had given it to her. I think that my favorite thing especially in my recent trip was the people. I loved the children in the townships. Their smiles are infectious.I...

Safari trip / Kruger national Park !

by Brad87

What kind of Safari are you looking for ? Camping or Lodge ? How many days ? are you alone ? You should visit the web site of some tour operators such as Africa travel co Acacia or Nomads for instance. Otherwise, here is the link of some safari that you can do around Pretoria : http://www.overlandingafrica.com/tour-details.php?tid=162 (4 days, Kruger national park)or this one http://www.overlandingafrica.com/tour-details.php?tid=108 ( 22 days). The Kruger National Park is impossible to miss!I booked my trip last year with them but it was around Victoria falls. On the web site, there are all the safari trips that you can do in South Africa, and , of course, around Pretoria. But You can get all the details by yourself on Google and try to find other tour operators.About the questions that you should ask : just try to get a lot of details, mainly about the money that you will spend during...

Safari help from a South African

by Safari_Guru

I am a resident in South Africa and have used many travel services. The best advice I can give - especially if you are abroad, is to speak with a reliable travel consultant, not necissarily a travel agent. A good website that I have come across is Safari-central.com. I think that these people fit the criteria you have stipulated. These guys can organise any type of tour of South Africa. They do not only offer safaris, you fill in your interests on the contact page, and they get back to you with a travel itenary. The weather in late April is typically 15-25 degrees centegrade. There are some autumn showers, and the temperatures are slightly cooler at dawn and dusk, maybe 7-11 degrees centegrade.May I ask which country you are travelling from? I promise you, many visitors to our country travel alone, so you will be in good company and I'm sure you will make friends. South Africans are...
