Malerone / Malaria Sabi, Kruger, Africa mosquito

by Flyin4Free

We went to Sabi Sands in the last week of Feb, 2008. Took malerone just as a precaution, and neither my wife or myself had any effects from it at all. (180lbs and 119lbs respectively) We only saw one mosquito while we there. They say it hadn't rained in 2 months, and it rained the last part of our last evening vehicle safari. It was awesome!COSTCO had it pretty cheap compared to other places, and with my insurance, a 7 day supply was only $20 after the insurance. www.djuma.com incredible experience!! find my other tips and links..

Weather

by Acirfa

The seasons in South Africa are directly the opposite to those in the Northern Hemisphere. The dominating warmth of the country is interspersed with chilly, in fact cold winter evenings, particularly in the Highveld, the Lowveld does not generally suffer from the extremes of weather and is more of a tropical type of climate. The Cape has warm and rainy winters, the summers warm and sunny but it can be windy in this region.Having said all this, climate change is evident in South Africa, where as once you could time your day by the rain falling at 4pm each afternoon replaced very quickly by the sun shining again, the seasons were very easy to tell apart, I have to say our last trip brought with it alien weather and chatting to locals it seems they have had cold, wet summer days and sunny mild winter days.

Passports

by Acirfa

make sure you have at least 6 months remaining on your passport on the day you leave SA.You do not required (if you are British) a visa however do ensure you have two adjacent blank pages in your passport

Language

by Acirfa

Although there are 11 official languages of SA, you will not struggle as it is very rarely you will come across someone who cannot speak English and all signs are mainly in Afrikaans and English. The other dominant languages are Xhosa and Zulu

Go2Africa travel agency

by WorldGuy

South Africa is the trip of a lifetime, but avoid Go2Africa when you are booking your trip. We have amazing experiences in Cape Town and on safari. The only downside (a big one!) was Go2Africa's lousy performance. A classic example of a company you do not want to do business with if something goes wrong. There's lot of Africa booking specialists - be sure to pick one more reliable than Go2Africa. Safaris are the experience of a lifetime.

Animal Photography in National Parks

by MichaelFalk1969

It is highly advisable to buy a digital camera with a very good optical zoom and a stabilizer. Sometimes the animals appear directly on or near the road ... most of the times they keep some distance. With a normal 3X-digital zoom most animals will be just brown dots in the distance. A strong zoom also helps if you take photographs of interesting small animals (especially birds). I had good results with a 10xoptical zoom. The more zoom you got, the easier to ruin a picture with shaky hands, so a picture stabilizer is very useful. Many digital cameras have optional extra functions that can be extremely helpful. A great help is the "serial photograph" function: You can adjust your camera to quickly take up to 5 pictures in a row of one object, which is excellent if you want to take photographs of moving objects. If you would take the photos one at a time, the animal will be quickly gone....
