My 'small five'

by TheWanderingCamel

"The Big Five" - you hear, and see, reference to these everywhere in South Africa - lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo - they're on eveyone's wish list. By all means put them on yours, but don't let the pursuit of them get in the way of taking pleasure in small things - these are some of my favourites - my "small five"A tiny, brilliant green chameleon on the roadGuineafowl everywhere -I love their quiet clucking and soft grey feathers with white spots Flat topped acacia trees - they are just so "African"The flashing colour of birds like the rainbow bee-eater and the amazing blue glossy starlingA tree full of the tiny, perfectly-made nests of a colony of weaver birds

Textiles

by TheWanderingCamel

Anyone who has read the shopping tips on any of my other pages will know I'm an inveterate collector of textiles. Not only do I love them, but I think they make marvellous souvenirs - unbreakable, easy to pack and reminders of your travels that you can actually use in an everyday context once you get them home. No wonder I loved the washing lines of brilliant textiles pegged out along the roadsides of South Africa. Whether cotton tablecloths, as here near Kruger, or Lesotho rugs high in the Drakensberg, they looked wonderful. I resisted buying though ( I already had a cloth from Zimbabwe, at home patterned with guinea fowl, that I loved) until I got to the airport and then I succumbed - more guinea fowl were my downfall, Zimbabwean ones at that!

Stay a few days in Capetown.

by gonzo747

I only had one day in Capetown and that was a mistake. Capetown is a very beautifull city with many things to do.When we arrived there were many clouds. Because of this we couldn't see table mountain properly. If you stay a few days you will defenately have a clear day.

Pick up a copy of "Coast To Coast"

by sunshinejo

If you're travelling around South Africa on a budget, then "Coast To Coast" is a must have item! It's a small publication, that's free and widely available, usually in hostels. Inside is a wealth of information on hostels throughout South Africa, giving details on prices, facilities, discounts available, as well as contact info and a description of the local area. It also contains some pretty handy hints on South Africa in general, and a rough map of the country.

TOKOLOSHE

by PEE-WEE

In Southern African folklore there exists a small but malicious "creature" known as the tokoloshe. The tokoloshe, which is normally described as small, hairy and beast like, appears to take pleasure in causing damage and distress.Rather like the poltergeist, it reveals its presence with wanton acts of destruction, but if somenewspaper accounts can be beleived, itcan be "called up" to persecute or punish a particular household. The tokoloshe legend is a familiar one, and it is traditionally associated with the black community, but there is a measure of ignorance, and sceptism, regarding it's existence within other sectors of society An African traditional belief that small imp-like men with evil intent will come upon innocent sleepers in the middle of the night. Many believers raise the heights of the beds by placing the bed on bricks - in an attempt to prevent the tokoloshe from reaching...

THE KAROO

by PEE-WEE

The Hottentot word for this place "Karoo" (a thirstland) perfectly describes this arid area of low rainfall, meagre vegetation and haunting rock outcrops. It's a remote, moody and lonely - but absolutely extraordinary landscape and any time spent here will have you touching parts of your soul you don't often access.

Wildlife paradise!

by TracyG

I'm sure that this is one that a lot of people say, but you really must go to Kruger NP. Amazing animals, and brilliant photo opportunities - even if it is one of the most crowded national parks in Africa. (See my Kruger Park Travelogue for more photos) Cape Town and the view from Table Mountain, it is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever been to.
