George has a well-served airport for such a relative small town.
It used to be called P.W. Botha airport, after the infamous ex-President. It was quickly renamed after the end of apartheid, and is now George Airport, or just known by it's code, GRJ.
Local legend has it that the airport should have been situated in nearby Oudtshoorn, as the approach to George over the mountain is especially dangerous (this is also where cricket captain Hansie Cronje died in a plane crash). The interventention of the Groot Krokodil (Botha), had them build it in George though, which was conveniently close to his old voting district, and summer home (and current residence) in the Wilderness.
An alternative airport to get to George is Plettenberg Bay. Both airports peak during the summer holidays, when everybody and his dog flies down from Johannesburg for the summer.

Please note that George airport is often closed up with mist during the winter months, if you are getting a international connection flight in Johannesburg please allow enough time to allow for this possibility. I would not take a same day international flight during winter months.
My husband flies from this airport often and this past year many people missed international flights.

When arriving at George Airport to get to town ( York Street) you drive as follows, drive out of airport to where you get onto the road, turn right( south) towards N2 highway, at the highway take a left turn ( east) and drive till you get the York Street turn off, turn off left, and again left in York Street.
In York Street you can find most things you may need.

You can walk from George airport to N2 if you are a bit fit, it is a few km but I have seen many backpackers walking the distance. when you get out of the airport onto the road turn RIGHT and walk straight until to highway turnoff. Here you have a choice of left to Garden route and George or walk a little further and turn right to Cape town ( info for hikers) remember you are not allowed to hike On the highway so collect your lift before.

If you want to hire a car and drive in South Africa but dont feel to drive in big and busy cities then Goerge is the airport to be, fly to George from Cape Town or from Johannesburg, car rental at airport , avis, budget etc, and from here you can drive garden route east and west (missing the busy cities like Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, - still lots to see.
George is not a very big airport and therefore not as much traffic as a big city..

There are a lot of roadworks ( March 2007) from Plettenberg Bay area to George Airport, my trip took 2 hours longer, although it should not take so long build up of traffic at times can cause long delays, if you lucky you get through quicker,PLEASE ALLOW FOR THIS AS NOT TO MISS FLIGHTS!!from George Airport.
