Kruger is one of South Africa's largest National Parks, and one of the best for viewing large animals in the wild. It is a massive tract of land (about 50 miles wide by 200 miles long) in which wild animals roam freely. Nearly all of South Africa's large animal species live in Kruger, including lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, hippos, crocodiles, cape buffalo, hyenas, impalas, nyalas, and other antelope species.
Kruger has a network of paved and unpaved roads running through it that you can drive along as you explore the park. Due to the presence of wild animals, you MUST stay in your vehicle in most areas of the park. There are, however, some concession areas scattered around the park, where they have gas stations, restaurants, shops, lodging, and picnic areas.
Kruger is large and you have to drive slowly (so that you don't hit any animals), so you should plan on spending at least two days driving around the park. If you don't want to drive yourself, you can take a guided safari, in which they drive you around in a truck with open-air seating, which is higher up than seats in a car, and therefore gives you better views.
There is a limit on how many people can visit Kruger per day. You can reserve a spot through the website of SANParks, SOuth Africa's National Parks organization. However, if you are there during slower periods of the year, there is no need to make a reservation.
Game viewing is best at the beginning and end of the day, so arrive at Kruger as early as possible in the morning to see the most species. During the middle of the day, a lot of animals are sleeping or resting, so they are tougher to see.
Winter is the best season for visiting Kruger, because there is less vegetation to get in the way of seeing the animals. During the summer, it gets very hot, and the tall grass and other vegetation makes it tougher to see the animals.

The Hazyview Elephant Sanctuary is a small private zoo dedicated to elephants. They do daily programs, in which they teach you about elephants and let you stand next to them, feed them, and touch them (including their feet, ears, trunks, tusks, and tongues). For an extra fee, you can also take a 15-minute ride on an elephant with the help of a guide, who rides with you and does the steering. Our daughter really enjoyed the Elephant Sanctuary, especially the part where you got to touch the elephants.
When we were there, they had two elephants that they used for the programs. One was an adult male, and the other was a juvenile that was about 10 years old. They guides had significant experience with elephants and were very informative. One had been an anti-poaching ranger prior to working there, while another had previously worked at a national park.

A must when you are in Hazyview are River Rafting in the Sabie River.
There are no boats; instead you float on tube rings (from a car!) down the river...
It's a amazing feeling to float on the tube trough the lush rain forest...
