Every year, from July to December, the Southern Right Whales travel thousands of miles to the Cape south coast of South Africa to mate and calve in the bays. Join the villagers of Hermanus to experience awesome sightings of these magnificent animals as you enjoy a meal in a restaurant, browse through the craft market, walk along the cliff paths or gaze out your window.

Take a walk on the rocks (there is not much of a beach). There are nice paths along the sea. Take a walk through the town. Lots of nice shops, crafts, art, antiques etc. Tons of coffee shops and restaurants. I loved the look of this guest house.

The whales are fascinating. There is a restaurant down on the rocks. You are very close to the sea. We could sit there for hours watching the whales.
In this picture (it's very small, a little black spot ) there is a baby seal swimming with the whales.

Between August and the end of November you'll be able to see whales all along the coast. A very popular place to see them is Hermanus. It's so popular because you can walk along the cliffs from where you have a great view of the sea and of the whales who come very close to the cliffs. In no other place you can see them so well and so close.
Hermanus itself is very touristy of course. But other than the whales, all the curio shops and one or two good restaurants it doesn't have a lot to offer.

I prefer this one to the one at Boulders, not so many people and you get real up close and personal to the penguins. They have a lovely path that you can follow with great views
Price R15.00 per adult
not sure about children.

A craft market is held on the market square every Saturday and public holidays. You can buy some preserves, home made clothes, imported clothes, jewellery, tablecloths you name it here. Most of the stuff is handmade and very affordable.
Not a lot of mass produced items find its way here.
