During the school holidays, Kenton-on-Sea is a popular holiday destination for South Africans, and then accomodation is hard to find. Outside holiday times, it is very quiet and one can have a wonderful break. The beaches are deserted and invite you for along, relaxing walk.

there are morning and afternoon game drives at Kariega, you are assinged a ranger when you arrive and always go with him in the same vehicle
Our ranger was Brendon, he was great, full of enthusiasm about his job and about Kariega itself, not only was he a mine of information about the animal and plant life, but also about the conservation and preservation work done here, we really enjoyed his company
the vehicles are the usual open land rover types, if you are worried about being bumped around a lot because you have any medical problems then ask your ranger and fellow guests if you can sit in the front passenger seat, this is the lowest and most enclosed seat but lots of people like it simply because its the front seat, actually the view is better from the seats behind as they are higher. There are rain capes and blankets kept on the vehicles, the blankets were really welcome after sunset when it gets very chilly
there are many well defined tracks at Kariega and the drives were not as bumpy as we had thought they would be even when we went off the beaten path to obsrve the animals better, there had been heavy rainful before we arrived, some streams were impassable and we occasionally had a skid but it was exciting and added to the experience
also included is a boat trip along the river but due to the heavy rains that was not available while we were there
Kariega bisected by a main road, the morning drives are taken the side where the lodges and facilities are, and afternoon drives are in what Brendan referred to as the `predator enclosure`basically the side where you dont wander around because you may get eaten !
believe me its NOT a great place to get a flat tyre..... at sunset the rangers find a clearing and out comes the beer, wine, soft drinks and crisps, standing there watching the sunset surrounded by beautiful scenery and wild animals is an amazing experience
